Default Pierogies in buffalo...

As a forthcoming transplant, I am gonna miss my pierogies. Any recommendations on pierogies in Buffalo? Can be sitdown or buy and make at home.

A good place to start would be the Broadway Market, near the intersection of Broadway St and Fillmore Ave in the city. It's the center of what used to be a huge Polish community on the city's east side. Lots of other shops in there as well. Mass-produced pierogi are readily available in major grocery stores, but if I want to spend a little more for handmade, I go here.

There are also scattered Polish specialty shops/bakeries eastward from Broadway/Fillmore, usually closer to (or in) eastern suburbs like Cheektowaga or West Seneca. Sorry to be so vague but a lot of great ones have closed over the years, and I'm not sure what's still open!

Oh, and remember to drop the "s" when you're asking for them; "pierogi" is already the plural form of the word.

Wow, saved my bacon on this one. I grew in a polish neighborhood on the south side of chicago. (Both parents from Poland). Once I got married and moved to the west suburbs, I was sweatin it. Luckily I found a few polish deli's that worked great. Handmade the way to go. Just cant stomach the OTC stuff.

The Broadway Market is also a good place to pick up a handmade Butter Lamb around Easter. And we have a big Dyngus Day celebration in Buffalo at the Central Terminal (if you're driving around Broadway/Fillmore, you can't miss it). That's a good time too.

I will say one thing. Buffalo is the first place that had a restaurant that had a fried bologna sandwich on the menu. Of course, I ordered it. And it was tastee.

Also, considering the strong Polish community in the Buffalo area, it shouldn't be hard to find a good handmade pierogi.

St. John The Baptist Ukrainian Catholic Church on Elmwood Ave. in Kenmore (Next to Mt. Olivet Cemetary).

There's a listing in the Phone Book - you can call and order as many as you want - the "Peiroghi Ladies" meet once a week or so to make them - Potatoe, Kapusta, Cheeze - I think is all ( maybe mushroom, too - I'm not sure). My mom used to be one until she died a few years back - my aunt sometimes goes if she's feeling well..

They have a great Easter and other Holiday dinners there, too...but you have to check the calendar...

but I can only speak from personal experience...

Is Redlinski still around - best Polish sausage around, IMO...

Believe it or not - there's a great Polish deli and restaurant that opened up here in Vegas a few years back! - and now I've come across about a half dozen or so "Eastern European" markets and delis around town - half of them are Russian, one is Serbian. Almost like being "home" in Buffalo...
