Well, the high number of boats is more easier to explain as we have 2 Great Lakes and a good portion of the Niagara River is navigable. Plus, some smaller lakes nearby like Chautauqua Lake, Silver Lake, Lime Lake and probably a few other ones I'm forgetting. Not to mention, the Finger Lakes aren't all that far of a drive.

I can see how the lack of community pools drive pool ownership, but the season has to be really short no?

In comparison to a lot of places, yes, but people will go swimming at colder temperatures than they would in other places. People just try to make the most of the summer.

I also wonder if it is a Northern thing. I was from a small town in Canada, and I think that about 1 in 4 houses had pools.

Most open the pools in May by mothers day and close them in October - we have beautiful sept and october weather - and my richer friends heat them - they figure if you are going to have one - why not utilize it the most you can - hey if you can afford to heat it up - why not????????
