Yep, by far. West isn't all that great, actually the safest parts of the city are somewhat near the middle...

For the most part its pretty blighted but there are some halfway decent streets left.

The Broadway Market area is nice... Broadway/Filmore IS making a comeback. Check out their website..."Broadway Filmore Alive" or something like that...

Broadway Market is a fairly high crime area. The HSBC branch there is the one that gets robbed the most. About a month ago there were even two bank takeovers (the robbers put a gun to a manager's head both times and demanded a certain amount of money). It could be robbers from surrounding area though.
