And another thing that sends off uncomfertable red flags for me.. this concept of white flight. The last time I heard that phrase was during an episode of "all in the family" when I was like 8 years old. The term "white flight" just seems..so.. I don't know..archach. Like it was an issue/social occurance/whathave you that ended in the 80's and 90's.
Yea we have a neighborhood or two thats mainly white and some nighboorhoods that are predominatly black/hispanic but the school I went to was 50/50. There is a pretty good mix of races in the neighboorhood I live in. I'm used to being the only white girl in a room. Let me put it like this.. we went to a very white highschool for a drama competition and I don't think i've ever felt quite so out of place. Eventhough I went to an ethnic school and live in an ethnic neighborhood, neither are lower class. Yea our highschool didn't recieve as much funding and there are drug dealers in our neighboor hood but no body messes with anyone else and we get along just fine. I ride my bike every weekend past the house we know are full of drug dealers and they've never so much as said a word to me. Oh and no one has their car up on blocks or 6 foot high grass - as the the steriotypes would have you believe.

Hmm. When I look back on all this now, I was not trying to be mad, I was just trying to give some perspective. I do agree, I hate our government. Unfortunatly I did not vote for them as I just moved back recently from a long stay (4 + years) in Potsdam NY. I do agree our government needs to go, they make it hard for anyone to do anything good for the city. As for unions, my fathers union at Dunlop put my through college, so I cannot really comment on them. Anyway I also said that I do agree that we need to fight against our gangs. I am an advocate for fighting back and reporting every criminal activity. I was more noting that there are reasons why people live with gangs, I have studied crime. Anyway, I do agree that it is dumb. I am also all for welfare reform, and some pretty drastic controversial reforms that I will not get into. I am an active advocate for push and buffalo reuse, and know that we need to do something about the city schools. I know I would prefer to live in the city but if I have kids, will probably end up living in Hamburg.
Anyway, on with my rambles... One thing I said is working on the waterfront, I am actually in process of working on a plan for a musuem on the water. Don't get excited though, you know Buffalo will fight me every way.
When I said you should live in one of the smaller towns far away from the city that was not to be malicious. That was really my suggestion for your happiness.
Sadly, I am one of the young that may need to leave forever. I am 23, I was laid off from my job at a buffalo law firm in april. I am still unemployed and will probably need to leave to find work. I agree the city needs to change a lot, including kicking everyone in office out and getting new people. I love this city, I had dreams for a home (a specific one). What we need are jobs, and good ones. It is ridiculous that I was making less money as a paralegal than I would make being a manager at Family Video.
I am sorry if i pissed you off about buffalo more. I've been going through some tough times on top of getting laid off, so sometimes I can be a lot more angry sounding than I think I am.

ajacques, don't worry. I think you and your gf will be fine there. When you get there, you will notice that there are some neighborhoods like the one you described living in. I would look at the Elmwood area or North Buffalo, deninitely.

not happy about moving to Buffalo
I undestand where you are coming from, but you will learn to love it here. My husband, then 2 year old son and I moved here 14 years ago. We moved here from Vancouver, BC, on Easter weekend. It was SNOWING. everything was brown and dirty... we had lived previously in Vancouver, Stossdale, AZ, Miami, Washignton DC< and Chicago. He is from London, UK. It took me about 2 years to get adjusted. My first winter I asked people if they went to work when it snowed. (HAH!!!). I din't like sports and was told to pick either football or hockey. Fast forward ..I LOVE THIS PLACE! Husband got a job in Omaha and has been "commuting" for the past 18 months b/c we don't want to leave. You have lots of of choices. Funky elmwood village, or grand homes in delaware park or off Hertel over by main st, or you can move out to the beautiful village of East Aurora, or WIlliamsville, or you can live 25 minutes outside of the city and have horsefarem Or like me, you can live in lancaster, and lease a horse, 25 minutes away! We have the lake in the summer (take a book, lunch and a chair and it is like a day at the beach, you have the falls, the big TO for city living, trendy bars and clubs downtown,
We dont' have to worry about tornados, hurricanes or earthquakes. Snow melts and we deal wiht it well. Schools in the burbs are good. Ok, taxes suck, but that is the trade off. People are friendly here, small city with a big heart is what I say....and yeah, I hated sports , now I am a bigtime hockey mom at son's games, and I LOVE the sabres....I can't imagine living anywhere else. I love it here. I didn't when I came, ..at all...give it a chance, take your time and find out where you want to live - city or burbs, countryside or not, new town or older historic one, diverse community or no, it is all here, You will love it, it will grow on you. Just give it a chance. I am gld I did...

I'd rather live near an old car on blocks in the yard that is going to be fixed to provide basic transportation to a person who happens to be a member of the working poor than one of these idiots with the 6 foot high, ridiculous wheels and a stereo with a bass beat that sounds like a stinkin' road grater chopping up pavement. These cars are in perfect shape, yes, but that is because they are bought and restored with drug money
