The financial giant that I currently work for is expanding operations here in Buffalo, and closing up shop in LA, and other high cost areas. The CEO came in and touted to all of us how "cost effective" that Buffalo was. I translated that to people will work for nothing here. So the two areas that they are expanding is Buffalo, and India. They don't offer people real jobs. I am one of the lucky ones, to be a corporate employee. Most of the hiring at my company in Buffalo is $10.50 per hour, no benefits, no insurance, nothing. You work for a temporary agency. If you get sick, or want to take a vacation, you are replaced, because there are tons of people clawing to get a over $10 per hour job.
Its sad. The people who take these $10.50 per hour jobs with no benefits are not idiots for the most part. Many graduated from UB, Buffalo State, and other Colleges. Some have Bachelors, some have Masters degrees, and are swimming in student loan debt.
How many years of that life can a person take before they move away?

This is so true, I left Buffalo a decade ago because I was sick of being a permatemp even though I'm a UB grad. The work I was doing required only a high school diploma anywhere else. Most of my fellow permatemps had a BA or higher.
It's the whole state that is the problem though. If it isn't the high taxes and crappy jobs upstate, its the high taxes and high cost of living downstate.
I live downstate now and even though finding work was easy here the cost of living and the taxes are crushing me! I would move down south but the recession has dried up work down there. So now I am stuck in this state employed in something I went to school for, but slowly going broke. You can't win in this state!

Hey, look at Houston, Lubbock, Beaumont, Knoxville, Lexington, and DFW; they all have low unemployment, lower than NYC. If you can take the midwest, Omaha is still booming.
Here is the unemployment rate of every metropolitan statistical area in the US.
http://www.bls.gov/news.release/pdf/metro.pdf
Even if a city has high unemployment, there are almost surely jobs, people are still being fired, quitting, or retiring. So while they may be fewer, if you have a decent resume, you can probably nab an interview or two.

1200.00 for rent? Why don't you just buy a home here. I would move back in a heartbeat to Williamsville/Clarence area but we are stuck on stop in outrageously expensive NJ!! the state where they bleed you dry!! My husband cannot wait to leave!
Be GLAD you don't need air here in the summertime!!! Would you like to trade my 400.00 a month electric bill for a/c running NON stop the whole summer? I never had allergies in Buffalo until I moved HERE *(NJ)*....
The grass is always greener somewhere else, isn't it??
|
Oh stop it. First of all I moved from Boston when I was 12 so my growing up and attitued came about in the south. Second 1200 for rent is crazy. Go on craigslist and look at what you get here in Georgia for that amount.
I already have a 400 mo a/c bill, doesn't matter that will switch to a 400mo gas bill when i move there.
Grass is always greener? Wouldn't that mean that I would think that WNY was greener than Georgia????

And you've been talking like a troll since your very first post. Every post you make is a slap in to face to Buffalo region. One thing you'll learn very quickly, the Buffalo area doesn't like being slapped in the face by an outsider. Either repect us (especially online) or don't bother coming at all.

If you're gas bill is $400/mo something is seriously wrong.

So alot of discussion on the topic which is good. The bad is that there are still people on here that wont be open minded and look at the facts.
Ok, so I've heard it..."Don't come". Like I said, too bad I'm coming.
"The OP is a ***** and doesn't like any city"...OK, I'll let your ignorance speak for itself.
"Looking for cobblestone". Nope just looking for decent housing. Without being ripped off.
I could go through the craigslist postings for homes and apts for rent here verses there, but I wont your capable of doing so yourself.
Anyhoo, I will stand my ground when I say that the citizens of Buffalo are being ripped off by your government. All that tax money and the city is almost broke and run down. Almost like enabling drug addicts, the residents are enabling the government to take advantage of them by sticking up for a city that is on the decline. Come to Atlanta then go back home, it will make you mad enough to leave again. I know soooo many people from the Buffalo area that now live here and say they will never go back. They are the main ones telling us not to go. Once you move some where else, to a city that cares and builds themselves up it will make you mad to see how little your city has changed for the good.
Thanks to everyone that wished me luck in finding what I want in Buffalo and for my happiness. I promise that when I do move there I will be a strong voice in the community, no matter who wants to hear it.
To the poster that kept calling me a "him", I'm a "her", but that's alright, your posting was positive and I get what you were getting at.
To the posters that kept a closed mind and still continue to defend and lash out at me, I challenge you to look outside your community to other cities. Just "troll" around look at housing, pics of major areas and see what I'm talking about compared to Buffalo. I'm not saying that everywhere is oh so great and Buffalo is the worst in the country, but by far you are not the best, no where near the best.
Like I said before it's sad when someone that doesn't even live there yet is more concerned and wishes to see the city prosper like it deserves to.

Don't take it too seriously. My electric bill is around 200 a month in summer so I guess my heat will be around 200 month.

Funny but I've met more people from Buffalo that slap it in the face than anyone else. LOL LOL LOL LOL!!!
Respect you (especially online)???? I'd rather someone respect me to my face more than anything.
Talking like a troll???? Oh yeah, a troll, someone who doesn't post every single day of their damn life. Hmmmm, what I believe what I was doing was expressing my concerns about a city that I am moving to.
One thing that you should learn very quickly is that I don't care what people think of this "outsider". I express my feelings and concerns. That's called someone that is active is making a real change in this country. Right now I can only express them online, but rest assured that I WILL express my concerns when I do move there.

I'd say $200/month in the dead of winter might be pretty close .... of course it can vary pretty widely based on how good your insulation is, how cold it is for how long, etc.
I paid a lot more for a/c in Texas than I do for heat here (of course you need a/c for the better part of 8 months in Central Texas).

When I visited Atlanta I was shocked at how much security there was downdown and in the parking lots at stores and restaurants in Buckhead. My impression of the place was: "Is crime so bad here that they have to have this level of security for people to feel safe?"
Also I didn't like the fact that everything was all gated communities. Not my style of living at all. Plus its hotter than hell in the summer! People were nice enough but something seemed missing.
If I was leaving where I live now (Long Island) I would probably choose Buffalo over Atlanta. Though Northern Virginia would be my choice over both of them. NOVA has the southern hospitality but more culture, less gated communities and easy access to great employment opportunities in Washington, D.C., plus its within a days drive of both Buffalo and Long Island (where our relatives live). Atlanta is ok to visit but its not all they crack it up to be. The water shortage thing there would really freak me out!
