Thank you moderator.
To all people who read this forum: I apologize for taking the bait and speaking off topic. If I "maligned and insulted" anyone - .
I have family members who have "fled" (that's a loaded word - they left, not fled) Buffalo - whether by joining the military, following their spouse's families, seeking warmer winters, or looking for better employment opportunities. Some wish to return - some have - but once your life becomes settled elsewhere it is difficult to move back. Wherever they live, they have been subject to many of the same difficulties people in WNY experience - crime, unemployment, monetary issues - but also many that people in WNY do not - hurricanes, collapse of home values, bad schools.
They are living (or have lived) in Toronto, NYC, Columbus, Los Angeles, Miami, Houston, Eastern PA, Las Vegas, Phoenix, Dallas, San Antonio - or have moved to the 'burbs - Orchard Park, Tonawanda, Amherst, West Seneca, Grand Island. (I have a big family)
I also have family members who stayed - Parents, Aunts, Uncles, Cousins - who live in the city limits and who have never been robbed, shot, assaulted, or burglarized (North Buffalo, West Side, Black Rock). Just to be specific, though, my parent's house was broken into in 1977 (by a neighbor's punk kid), and an Uncle's house in Kenmore was burglarized in the early 1970's. I was also a crime statistic as a result of an overzealous bouncer in the early 80's.
I understand there can be differences of opinion on what constitutes a "better" place. And everyone's experiences are also different. To challenge someone's experience - just because it doesn't match your world view - is not engaging in a debate. To present supporting data is, and I have tried to provide specific objective data in response to broad generalizations.
So have a nice day.

First of all it is spelled Syracuse not Saracuse. Second of all the Buffalonians are fleeing no where. If you took some time to look some information up you would not have this problem because first of all Amherst has grown by 5,000 people since the year 2000. The city of Buffalo has grown by 4,000 people since 2007.

Are you kidding me? The metro area has lost 50,000 people, and like adirondack said, Erie county lost 41,000 people. The city of Buffalo has not grown. I would love to see that census data that you are seeing schayban.

The Buffalo Metropolitan area has 2204 fewer people in 2008 than in 2007, and Buffalo proper has 1482 fewer, per US Census Bureau estimates.
If you really want to know specifically where people are moving to, the IRS publishes county to county migration data (for a fee, of course). There is also an interactive map which summarizes the data from 2000 to 2005, and is free:
Moving from county to county
One thing it shows which is obvious when you think about it, the population loss is a net loss - many more people actually move away, its just that there are also a lot of people moving into the area. Between 2000 and 2005 over 80000 people moved into Erie County, while about 100000 moved out (net of 20k).
So what are the most popular places to move to:
#1 is Niagara County with over 15000. The first out of state county is Mecklenburg NC at 1697, followed by Maricopa County AZ, Clark NV, and Pinellas FL.
So who moves to Erie County?
#1 again is Niagara County, with over 13000. Who comes from out of state? Top counties are Maricopa AZ with 627, followed by Los Angeles County, Cook County Illinois, and Mecklenburg County NC.

So, basically, the people leaving Buffalo are moving to Charlotte, Phoenix, Las Vegas and St. Petersburg, if they leave the state. People coming to Buffalo from out of state are coming from: Phoenix, LA, Chicago and Charlotte.

Probably like you said, people moving back, deciding that they don't like nice weather, or Conservatives.
Oddly enough I know quite a few people that moved from LA to here. I honestly can't blame them, who would want to pay $700,000 for just a so-so house?

You can also view this at city-data.com for free, type a county in the search box in the city search page (not the forum) and about halfway down you will find that data.

Its not even the $700k for a house. Its the whole attitude out there that perplexed me, people of the same social class wanting to be treated like rock or movie stars, and everyone there is so pretentious and fake. Befoer living on the west coast I would hear that and assume that the stereotype was overblown and its not. SoCal--the place to move to if you want to overpay on your house, be treated like a second class citizen by someone who makes less than you, and get lied to by everyone, and last buy not least the ground moves violently. Sounds like paradise to me
