Trying to move back to Buffalo and no luck finding a job
Hello, my husband and I are trying to relocate back to Buffalo. I am from Buffalo and my husband is not (he is from Ohio). He has been looking for a job now since October 2008 (he works in finance) and has not had any luck. Is this typical? I am very homesick and really would like to be closer to my family and friends.
Is there a job site that we are missing? Or what is the best route to find a job? We have been using the internet (indeed.com/monster/careerbuilder and Buffalo Niagara Partership)
I appreciate any advice anyone may have for me. Thank you!!

I really can't help you with info on jobs in finance but here is a link that may help you with your search (if you don't already use it)
New York's Job Exchange!

Well, jobs in finance are very few and far between. I have been watching the market since about January of 2008, and the jobs that pop up are down in no time, most are low level, paying about $30,000 a year.
You may be homesick and love Buffalo as many no doubt do, but the jobs just don't exist, if you have to move, I'd find a second choice in a growing city similar to Buffalo, perhaps Toledo, or even Columbus.
When you couple the fact that there are 500 graduates coming out of UB each year in finance, with the fact that most banks have moved their good jobs down south, it makes for a terrible market, sadly.
Best of luck with your search, I hope that you find happiness wherever you live.

Finance has been hit hard everywhere. Even big financial centers like Boston and New York are not hiring right now. Just have to wait out the downturn.

I don't know how far away from Buffalo you are willing to be. I wanted to come back to NY, grew up in Buffalo. I found a job in Rochester. It is only hour and a half away, I'm in Buffalo once a week sometimes, so it is not that bad. I know a couple who lives in Batavia, one works in Rochester, the other in Buffalo, just another scenario.
And from my experience, go to the companies websites and search for jobs there. If you are in finance, google the local banks in the area and search their websites. Alot of companies, mine included, don't use monster or another job search. You could also try a headhunter or a temp agency.

MT Bank and HSBC are two big employers here for finance.

That's not true. I am in the Hampton Roads area right now and there are good jobs open, even with signing bonuses, ditto in parts of NC and Tennessee. Check the BLS surveys if you don't trust my word. Last I checked Knoxville's unemployment for the finance sector was under 5% - If I remember right, and I generally have a decent memory.
They may be down from where they were, but I honestly can't say that Buffalo really has declined in terms of good jobs... they have been going away for at least 30 years now. Finding a job is tough now, and it will be tough when the rest of the country recovers. We don't get hit hard, but we never have any recovery.
Thank you Democrat Party policies for totally destroying Buffalo's economy!
If you are looking for a job because your husband is out of work, start looking elsewhere. I know people who have been looking for a good job for 10 years, have a college degree and are making $30k as store managers. And then they convince themselves that $30 in Buffalo equals $60k in most other cities. WRONG!

I appreciate your response.
How do you like living in Rochester?
Are there any major companies (I know of Kodak, Xerox, B&L) that you could suggest>for example my husband could work for their finance department. Thank you!
