moving to lockport, ny need help finding a safe area for renting an apartment
I recently graduated from ASU and just just landed a great fulltime position in Lockport, NY and start soon. I do not know the area( other than seeing the area a little after my interview). I need advice as a female, on finding a Very safe location to rent an apartment in Lockport.....(cost for rent etc)
Does anyone recommend me finding living in another area like Amherst , etc... and how far is this from East Ave in Lockport?
Also, give me info on the area and places to stay away from.

Generally speaking, the apartments in Lockport should be cheaper than the ones in Amherst, it all depends on what you value more. Being close to a big city, (Buffalo) or being close to work.
Lockport will have most of the shopping you need for your day to day living, (Wal-Mart, Home Depot, Tops, etc.) For anything else, you can be to Amherst in 20-30 minutes or so. Lockport is a pretty safe town for the most part. The only areas I really wouldn't move into is the area around Rattlesnake Hill, some of the streets around the old Harrison plant downtown and the apartments off Strauss Rd. just to the SW of Wal-Mart used to get a lot of police calls from what I remember.
I grew up in nearby Newfane, but I moved out about 6 years ago, so its really hard for me to recommend a "go-to" apartment complex. I did know a family who lived in the Locust Gardens apartments off of Locust St. by the Kenan Center and found those to be very nice and their rent seemed reasonable for the size of the place. Another friend of the family, lived in the Packet Square Apartments in Lowertown on the south side of the Canal and while her place was small, its seemed pretty nice at the time.
Either way, hope this helps, and Good Luck!

I wouldn't move to the apartments on Lockport/Dysinger rd either. The apartments around the Niagara county golf course are decent and cheap. The apartments on Tudor Lane are a little outdated though.

You didn't say what your budget is..
There are plenty of bad areas in lockport, and plenty of good ones.
What did you want to spend?

Depending on which part of Amherst and which part of Lockport anywhere from 7-8 minutes, or 25 minutes. There is I-990 and Millersport highway which both run very well (although I-990 was never completed and goes about 3 miles from Lockport). Transit Road is another quick route. There aren't any cities between Lockport and Amherst to traffic flows well, you can generally go at least 60 MPH without a problem. Traffic gets a little rough, but I haven't seen it that bad, and I go to Lockport nearly every week.
The more northern part of Amherst is by far nicer, but there are fewer apartments.
The advantage to Amherst is that you are closer to more shopping, dining, etc. But Lockport isn't far, and has a Wal-Mart, a few grocery stores, and is fine by itself. Lockport is really nice and quiet. You can find duplexes a little in the country with an acre of land.
Without saying the address could you tell us near which cross streets your job is at? Lockport is a really big place, it might help us to help you.
Congrats on the job, and welcome to Western New York.

Everyone has suggested for me to look for an apartment in the Amherst area, because its not far from Lockport, but I am still looking for a safe area. Any suggestions on apartments in this area?
Also, possibly to be a roommate with a professional or college grad.
Anyone know this area and can give me info, would be greatly appreciated?
