Yup, sad, but true. Buffalo might be one of the best urban school districts in the country, believe it or not.

Think about it, for a city of it's size, Buffalo has 6 of it HS's with grad. rates above the national average. That is hard to find in similarly sized cities. Again, high schools like City Honors, Hutchinson Central Tech, DiVinci, Emerson, and even Arts and McKinley Vocational all graduated at least 77% of it's seniors within 4 years according to the NYS Report Card on each school.

Last I checked, Buffalo has around 14-15 high schools, as the others I know about are: LaFayette, Grover Cleveland, South Park, East, Burgard Vocational, Riverside, Bennett and then you have new programs like Early Middle College(a 5 yr. school in conjunction with ECC that allows kids to get a HS diploma and an Associates degree at the same time), a Math/Science Prep school at Seneca, Olmstead's gifted program moving into the old Kensington HS(adding grades 10-12 soon), an occupational training school and the Academy school(PS 44).

Now, find me a similarly sized urban school district with those offerings and that have many high schools that perform at an above average to very high level.

New York State has some of the toughest high school graduation requirements in the nation. Your Regents Exams are very challenging compared to other states' standardized exams and the requirements to become a teacher are more demanding as well. I remember my college classmates from NY State, all somewhat more sophisticated and I credit the tougher standards in the public schools. I would not be surprised if the city kids in NY outperform their peers from other states.

Exactly, but people don't realize that if they don't know any better. That's why I say that some of the "bad" or "mediocre" schools in NY would be good in some other states or parts of other states.

Actually, I believe the "best" public school in NY might be an urban high school. I'm not sure if City Honors is that school, but NYC has some very good public HS's too(Stuyvesant, Brooklyn Tech, Bronx Science, Francis Lewis.......). Last year Buffalo's City Honors was ranked 35th in US News top 100 public schools in the nation. As good as that ranking is there were 5 other NY public schools ahead of it which IMO speaks to the overall quality of the states public school system. NY was tied with California at 6 schools each in the top 35 & NY led all states with 11 schools in the top 50 (CA was 2nd with 8).

City Honors has also been 11th, 9th & 4th in the last 3 years on Newsweek magazine’s list of the nation’s 100 best schools.

Yes I do. There is only one racist quote that he actually said (and it wasn't really racist, he just made fun of someone because he talked weird). The other two which have been circling around were originally added to Wikiquote (not cited), the media quoted Wikiquote, then other outlets quoted other outlets. So far several newspapers have apologized for the inaccurate quotes. Think about it, if Rush had said even 1 time that "slavery had its merits" the media would be all over it right away, not only that, but SOMEONE would be able to produce that show in 1998 when he supposedly said that.

I ignored it because it was wrong. The rate is 51%, I don't live in a fantasy land where if one media source says something that it's true. I'll go with the DOE over some blog.
