Thanks for the responses. Neither my wife nor I have accents and as far as having an open mind we both do. I think the biggest struggle for us would be the COLD WEATHER but that is something I guess you just get used to. I guess in terms of getting a feel for the city we will just have to wait and see if we even get to that step in the process, but from what I have seen in terms of pictures it seems to be very a pretty place.

Schools in both areas are fantastic so you really cant go wrong.

I agree. There are plenty of Black folks that came from the South in Upstate NY that still have their accents(like my mother). Actually, a lot of people migrated from the South to many cities and towns in Upstate, Black and White folks. So, don't sweat that.

It's not that bad. If you actually end up living in the city of Buffalo, try to get your children into the Olmsted Schools, which are still pretty good. If you actually stay, look at having them take the test for Hutch Tech, DiVinci or Visual Performing Arts High. McKinley Vocational High is probably the only other decent HS in the city of Buffalo.
North Buffalo has some very nice homes too.
If you want suburbs, don't sleep on Lancaster or Elma(Iroquois Schools) too. Alden or Eden wouldn't be bad either. If you want suburbs that are good with "diversity", Williamsville and maybe the Sweet Home part of Amherst would be fine. Maybe parts of the Amherst and Kenmore School Districts too.
Here's some info. for you to look at:

From everything I have researched, it seems beyond cold to me!!! I have dozens of friends from Minnesota and parts of Canada and if they can somehow survive, I am sure that I can buy a pretty thick coat!
As far as Memphis is concerned, it is probably the "smallest" big city I have ever lived in. My understanding is Buffalo is a bit smaller. As I said before, I am not looking for crazy night life and partying until 4AM. I just want a place where my family and I can feel safe and have things to do from time to time. Memphis has great music and food. That is what I love about it. People are kind of bizarre here. Sort of southern and sort of midwest, but honestly they have the worst tendencies of both. Pretty racist (we are hispanic) and have very negative opinions of themselves and the city. Again, we are very early in the process, but from what I know about the position it could be a go if things work out so I will keep you posted.

Amherst is still in the top two for safest places to live in the country as well as education systems. So it might be your best bet. What do you guys like to do to keep yourselves occupied? There are alot of theme parks as well as year round indoor water parks that you can utilize. Also alot of nature to explore, especially if you enjoy camping.

I LOVE SPORTS!! Love them. I have become a huge Memphis Grizzlies fan upon moving here and go to as many games as I can. I love football (college) and College Basketball! I love riding bikes and everyone says that it is a big thing in Buffalo, my question is what do people do in the Winter? Ski everywhere, forgive my ignorance on this one. My wife and I love Sushi so when I was in LA and New York I was in heaven. We also are into walking with our dogs and just enjoying outdoors stuff. I have NEVER snow skied and am sure I would fall in love with it.

As a former northener, if you keep an open mind, you will be fine in winter. There are plenty of winter sports. My concern is if you have never experienced 4 months of below freezing temps, it will throw you for a loop. I live in North Carolina now and frankly, I miss the cold winters. But I LIKE the cold. The people here have a heart attack when its below 40. They hate it... If you are one of those people, Buffalo will just be a nightmare and don't underestimate how cold it gets. I for one miss those cold snowy days...but thats just me. Most southeners would rather be bit by a black widow than endure a snowstorm. Just don't underestimate the affect the weather can have.

On average it is not below freezing here four months out of the year inactuality there are only about 25 days where the high temp is below 32 degrees. But don't take my word for it. Here is a link that compares Buffalo to Memphis. Though we are obviously much cooleer, we are also much, much drier some 14.1 inches less precip. per year in the City and an even more noticable 20+ inches less precip per year should you decide to locate in the northern suburbs. In fact we are the sunniest city east of the Missippi during the summer months.
