I remember about 4 years back in January when we went over 30 days without sunshine.

No offense but I trust their data more than I do yours as their source for the data is the National Weather Service and not a blog post. A fluke would not result in Buffalo being sunnier 3 out of the past 4 years. The News is basing it on days of 50% or more of available daylight hours being sunny. Often times the mantra of doom and gloom we are fed on a daily basis is hard to overcome even when the facts clearly state otherwise. Perhaps is is not your perception of the amount of sunshine we receive that is flawed, perhaps you bought into the whole 'sunshine state' baloney. Lookup how Florida got that moniker.

The story as I heard it was that in the early years of the last century the editor or owner of a paper (I believe the St Petersburg Times) came up with the slogan because he felt that the daily rainfall was hurting their image. So he figured if he kept calling it the sunshine state in the masthead of his paper people would eventually believe him. For a while he even offered a free paper to anyone if it rained all day. Since the rain was usually in the afternoon and not all day his gimmick did not cost him too much in lost revenues. This is how I remember hearing it in college. If you google perhaps you can find the details. I heard it from a trusted professor and have no need to re verify it for myself.

Buffalo is close enough to orlando in Sunny days that it is reasonble that they surpass Orlando when you are considering all days with more than 50% of available sunshine. I have been to Orlando in the summer and the sun is pretty scarce then.

I am also looking to move into a 3/2 in late March and right now we are looking at anywhere near 800-1200 depending on the location. Not only that but many of the homes for rent include utilities/cable so you can save alot there. Best way to go is through craigslist though, most people end up posting there.
I would also advise against looking for apartments in those areas as they are a bit overpriced and you can easily rent a home for much less. You should take a weekend trip and drive around a bit. Especially in the next few months to see if you can stand the cold. Thanks for considering Buffalo!

If it helps you any, my sister lives with 3 kids in the Williamsville/Amherst area and loves it and she's a transplant too (but from the metro NYC area, so although still a change, not as drastic weather or culturally as from California or the South). And yes, $100K salary will go a long way in Buffalo. The only knock (besides winter weather if that is a problem for you) is that I have heard both on these boards and from my sister that it is a great place if you're lucky enough to have a good, stable job (she's a tenured professor, for example), but if you don't, jobs are pretty hard to come by.

Actually, and I'm not sure it's still the record, but I've been collecting Guiness Books of World Records since a kid in the late 70s and I remember (being a bit of a "weather geek") the weather record section saying that St. Petersburg did have a WORLD record where it went something like 768 days (just a guess, but I know it was in the 700s.....which is over TWO YEARS) in a row of having sunshine for at least some part of the day. Now of course it could've been sunny 5 minutes and rained all day, but I think the free paper offer was if there was a day with zero sunshine entirely and that was the basis of it.

It wasn't my data, I was trying to post the charts from City Data... Just look it up. Orlando destroys Buffalo.
I don't know anything about how sunny or not Florida is. I do know that from October through May in Buffalo IS NOT SUNNY. At times, it's down right miserable - and anyone who has lived here their whole life can tell you that.
