I agree that there is a massive conspiracy headed by the National Weather Service to make up statistics so that Buffalo appears more cloudy than it is.

Some great city locations are in the Hertel/North area: Buffalo's Little Italy with a mix of duplex housing from the 1920's, large single family homes and apartments. A very nice area that is becoming the New Elmwood Village. Elmwood is located between the Museum District/Delaware Park and Downtown. A mix of Art Galleris, International Cusine's, Cafe's, Trendy Clothing Shops and more. Surrounded by big and small sized housing (single or multi), condo's, lofts, also a choice. Allentown District: Just north of Downtown is an historic neighborhood that offers housing dating back to the 1830's in preserved condition. This area is also very trendy, family friendly with antique shops, art galleries, local restaurants, cafe's, lounges and a short walk to the Financial District. A new area to live in is Downtown Buffalo. From condo's, lofts, apartment living. From the heart of the Financial District, Theater District or along the Waterfront, many choices to choose from. You may also check out: www.BuffaloPlace.com that has a variety of housing choices with contact info, along with a better description of city nieghborhoods, contacts for new residents, shopping, transit, etc. I wish you luck and welcome you to the Queen City!

Main @ Chippewa Street, the begining of the Theater District.

Main Street along the Metro Rail

Looking East from Buffalo City Hall Observation Deck

Looking north. That new building under construction is the New State of the Art Federal Court House set for completion in 2010

Actually the stats that show Buffalo to be more Sunny than you wish it to be are the ones from or referenced to the National Weather Service that I posted earlier.

We can look to our south and see the cloud line. Sometimes the cloud lines are so intense they look like mountains on the horizon. Very pretty indeedy! If you want sun in the winter move to the northern sections of the metro such as Lewiston, or Lockport, both are a half hour or less from downtown Buffalo and Lewiston is only an hour from downtown Toronto - not counting the time it takes to go through customs.
Just by way of a full year comparison. Last year the Buffalo area had 50 some more Sunny Days for the entire year than did Orlando Florida. This was reported in the Buffalo News and was based upon weather Service data. They defined Sunny Days as any day where more than 50% of the daylight hours were sunny. That was for the full year and not just the Summer months.
BTW the same section of the weather page also shows that we get clobbered in the sunshine derby by Phoenix

Often times the mantra of doom and gloom we are fed on a daily basis is hard to overcome even when the facts clearly state otherwise. Perhaps is is not your perception of the amount of sunshine we receive that is flawed, perhaps you bought into the whole 'sunshine state' baloney. Lookup how Florida got that moniker.

If you google perhaps you can find the details. I heard it from a trusted professor and have no need to re verify it for myself.

No one has to believe me, anyone can go out and buy the paper any day and see for themselves. It might not be so much that we have a lot of sunny days, it might very well be that orlando has an abundance of cloudy ones.

Ahhhhhhhhhhhhh...forget it. You win ...its sunny in Buffalo and cloudy and rainy in chilly Orlando...done.

In Donbuy's defense, FL is a lot cloudier than other places, its a huge misconception with the title of "Sunshine State", that mistake happens all the time down here.
I won't however, say that the Buffalo area is more sunny than the Orlando area but I haven't done my research either. Given what he has posted its not impossible for me to believe what he states is true, given the nature of the weather down here at all times of the year.

From page C12 of today's Buffalo news (10/30/09) Sunshine Derby Year to Date:
Buffalo - 136 days (not really that high of a number BTW)
Orlando - 100
Syracuse - 131 and
Phoenix - 207
Note that I never said we were near the top in annual sunshine nationwide (although for the Summer's where we are near the top) I merely stated the fact that we are considerably sunnier than Orlando, Florida.

^Exactly. Thanks for that.
I am curious if there is a comparison to also the Tampa, FL area. I really will have to dig deeper on this, those stats you post are surprising indeed.

Here's one, it's totally idiot proof, it shows the amount of possible sunshine each place receives.
Buffalo is very close to the bottom at 48%. Tampa is around the middle at 64%. So Tampa is sunny about 15% more than Buffalo, which is quite a bit. In the summer Buffalo is actually pleasant, but in the winter it's horrible - cold, dreary, gray, 80% of the time. But hey! We get three months of nice weather!
You can't say this data is biased because of measurement issues. It's from NOAA, and it even if it was cloudy for only an hour in a given day, that won't skew the results.
