hey just curious since we are now talking about economics, would I be able to get work there if I were and RN, or an x-ray tech, or sono-gram technician? When my time is up here (downstate)playing the civil servant role, I want to go back to school, get a degree and be able to go anywhere in the country to find a job,Western NY is where I want to move to I just figured those areas listed above might get me some stable work somewhere between buffalo and rochester. Thanks for any advice

I saw an interesting chart the other day about what jobs are coming and going for Buffalo... it says that between 2000-06 we lost 2300 jobs in manufacturing, lost 900 in high tech, we gained 2200 in healthcare, and gained about 200 in low level administration (probably the beginning of all the telemarketing jobs here right now).
I would guess that if we moved it to 2009 that we would see more manufacturing gone and a few more telemarketing jobs.
So jobs and companies are coming, but unfortunately they are leaving too.

Where is the sudden spur (did you mean spurt?) located? The only things I know of are the court, some call centers in the Crosspoint Parkway, and a new building on North Forest and JJ Audubon.

Yes, you would find a good paying job rather easily in those fields in the Buffalo area. You might also be able to get a decent sign on bonus & possible relocation assistance.

I think your attitude is typical of the folks around here. We're so over-taxed we direct our angst towards companies and their supposed deep pockets. After all, shouldn't they be paying their "fair share?" (Which of course means disproportionately more so that we'll have to pay less. So businesses close up and move out and we're left further in the hole than when we started)
Instead, we should be directing our rage towards the government. They need to cut spending so that you, I and businesses alike may pay less taxes. The problem isn't business, the problem is government. Oh, and unions.

Okay, you sound like me in a lot of ways. My problems stem from this. Our largest employer in our region is if I'm not mistaken the State Govt. followed by the Federal govt. followed by the County. (Erie) So any new jobs created for themselves only whacks us further more. Sure they pay state and federal taxes. All while we pay their salary and pensions.
(our taxes and theirs)
I am very pro business my friend. Not pro govt. I do not feel like the companies here should be paying more. That is completely wrong. I feel we lose business here because they simply cant afford to operate here with all the taxes they pay and then add on all the layers of crap they have to deal like the state labor laws and workers comp payments etc, etc, etc. I don't mind enticing companies with candy like low cost power or empire zone but tell me when does a power authority not look for a way to recover those loses and that my friend comes out of our pockets.
Here is NYS. Gov. Patterson (could be any NY Gov though) announces a hiring freeze and they add over 9000 new State jobs during that freeze.
Buh bye NYS.
Erie County Sheriff Howard squaking about having lost 104 positions during the budget crisis of 2005 or 06 only to have made up that loss and added employees as of right now, he replaced more than he lost. But wait!!
That is simply not good enough for him. Did you see the story in the paper today where he is now going to ask the County Legislature for 75 more employees!!!
Had enough of this. Sorry I don't share your optimism as I stated previously and let me tell you that I HAVE LOVED LIVING HERE but I don't see the silver lining or the silver bullet coming. A Yahoo here, a Bass Pro there and some medical professional jobs will create some short term construction jobs and that is not anywhere near enough to stave off the future hurt coming here.
I have been telling people lately that my reward for living here is the Bills, (likely moving soon) the Sabres (went bankrupt and nearly moved) and Shea's. Once the Bills leave I have a lot less to benefit from.
Buh bye NYS. I'm out. I feel for those that stay.

Would also like to add that my comments are definately in the wrong thread and I didn't mean to hijack this thread. I was merely responding to stuff already written. Sorry if I got carried away
Back on topic though, I live in Cheektowaga because well because I have to right now. I will say however that Lockport is a beautiful place to live but to me the best place to live is Allentown. You are in a walkable neighborhood that is in good shape and has terrific nightlife. There are some fantastic side streets with some real gems for houses. The one problem with Allentown is there are also some dumps on some of those same streets but it is a cool vibe and great place to live.

Hey people I love the Youngstown area. It is so nice and peaceful, and absolutely no crime! The thing is, anywhere in western ny is going to have high taxes, and no jobs. It is a tough place here! I have lived in Youngstown for 24 years, and I am getting ready to move to Vegas on Nov 10. I have a job with M&T Bank right now, but I feel like I am stuck! This state is just to depressing, especially when we have a moronic governor like we do! He is a joke! Sorry, didn't mean to get off of topic

You are right on all the way! Paterson is just horrible, it almost makes me long for the days when our governors hired Moderator cut: inappropriate/off topic
I'm kidding of course, Spitzer was just as lousy.
It seems like Vegas is a happening place. Wouldn't be my pick, but I'm sure it's no worse than WNY.
My 3 favorite towns are Knoxville, Tulsa, and Lexington... but I will be applying everywhere South or West of Buffalo (outside of NY and PA), this place makes you lose faith in humanity pretty quick.

Except you love where you live outside of the gun laws and taxation as you claimed a few days ago.
