Best Driving Directions from Baltimore to Burlington? (Washington: to buy, vs.)

Hello, My family and I will be driving up to Burlington from Baltimore in a few days and don't know which way to go! We would like to avoid NJ/NYC but don't want to add 100 miles to our trip in order to avoid the traffic over there. We will most likely be leaving in the evening around 8 or 9pm drive for four hours, stay overnight somewhere, and than continue our trip the next morning. I would love to hear any scenic routes once we enter Vermont however again don't want to add too many miles to our trip than will be necessary. We have 3 children under the age of seven so worry that the long drive will be too much for them!

This is a very recent thread with pretty much the same question. I would never go into PA to get to Vermont. In my view the drive thru NYC on I95>I91 is not that bad. Or you could just stay on the Jersey Turnpike and keep driving north which will get you on I87(NY State Thruway) around Suffern, NY. This way would be much less traffic. If you want to avoid the interstates and NYC that would be complicated and would take much, much longer.

Wow. I do this quite often. In fact, just got back to Baltimore from Burlington. You have to resign yourself to either do the freeways with lots of traffic or take your time and choose to enjoy the way there vs. getting there. I go up 83 and wind my way through PA over to the Delaware Water Gap. Up and over to Fishkill, NY along 84 and then take the Taconic Parkway to Washington Hollow on 44 and then up 22. 22 is surprisingly not heavy with traffic, enjoyable, and very few lights. I take 22 and 22A over to 4. In Vermont, you have a number of options; all of them nice drives. I take two days to do this and have friends with a cabin near Fishkill to stay over. Of course, there are many other options and I've tried them but I find this route to be the most scenic and enjoyable. I usually stop somewhere near Lancaster to buy produce, that kind of thing.
