Are there any second run/cheap seat movie theaters in the area?

Hmmmm....good question! Am going to follow this post. There used to be the Ethan Allen Cinemas on North Ave that showed second run movies. I'm pretty sure they are closed now.

The short answer is that the economics of discount second run no longer makes sense in most cases. The time from first run to video or streaming or cable is shorter, the movies are not intellectual films with "legs" but action with a short shelf life, and the real estate, energy, equipment, and licensing costs are high even before you add in taxes. Just consider for a moment how much must have been spent on heating fuel alone this past winter at one of the complexes.

In the 80s and 90s I ran a new-then triplex in Newport. And yeah, it certainly does cost a bit to keep those places warm, but for a few hours on a good night, with enough people in the seats, the place heated itself - kinda like a cattle barn. It would actually get stuffy on sub zero nights. Enough so, that I had induct outside air to keep folks comfortable. It was a small trade off, but still one that I took note of.
