Are there rentals available in these areas? I feel like it would be wise to rent for at least a year before buying. We would need at least a 3 bedroom, but 4 would be better.

Unfortunately...not a ton.
Check the local papers:

Hinesburg Record: The Hinesburg Record

I'd also suggest signing up for The Front Porch Forum and asking there: Front Porch Forum

Hi, we moved to South Burlington roughly 2 years ago. We went through the same process. Rented for a year and then purchased a home this past Aug.

Front Porch Forum is a great resource as well as Craigslist looking for rentals. There isn't a ton on inventory so you have to be on the ball.

Thank you! I think I found some temporary housing for us to stay in over the summer so we can check out several towns, also figure it would make it easier for us to secure a rental.

You've been there two years? What are your favorite things about Vermont? What have you found to be the most surprising?

When we moved to VT I posted a "house rental wanted" ad in Craigslist and landed a nice 4 bedroom house in Williston. The owner was a GE Healthcare employee who was transferred out of VT and didn't want to sell yet. I think you'll find cases like that around these towns, especially with some IBM exits happening. We rented for a year while we made certain the area was right for us and then purchased.

Also, look at the rental listings at lmsre.com and hickokandboardman.com if you're looking for a house.
