I've read a few different last frost dates for Vermont (Chittenden County) ranging from May 25th to June 8th. I'm being very impatient about wanting to plant my Impatients and my Alyssums. The forecast looks good for the next week or so. It doesn't look like we have any risk of frost. What do you guys think? Should I go ahead and plant this weekend or is that too risky??

Wait, you might be glad you did. Only things that tolerate frosts should be planted right now.

We always wait until Memorial Day weekend. Go ahead and plant some pansies now if you want to see some color!

Go for it! The long term forecast looks ok. Depending on where you are in Chittenden county you have a good chance of being ok anytime after May 15 and it doesn't look like there will be a problem over the next week.

Keep an eye on the weather and you can always throw something over the blooms if there happens to be a scary night or two. Besides, as they say, "no guts no glory".

Still too early for annuals in the NEK, but my rule of thumb is after the full moon in May if it's around the 20th or later. I'll be filling my window boxes, hopefully, this weekend and keeping an eye on the weather. I take them in at night if it's going to be a cold one.

That's a good idea. Did you make the window boxes yourself? I've been thinking about asking my husband to make some boxes for our front window.

Years ago I made my own, but wood tends to be fairly labor intensive. It takes a bit of effort to build them, but it's rather simple work. They need to be sanded a bit, primed and painted too. They will also require a good cleaning, drying and proper storage each year or they'll rot. Ask me how I know this! So I buy the ready-made vinyl ones. If you don't see them in a color you like, they're very easy to paint.

Wow, that does sound like a lot of trouble. I think I'll stick to the vinyl ones. Thanks for the advice.

We planted petunias and some other annuals this weekend in Stowe... we have intense southern exposure and are pretty sheltered from the wind so we went for it. And this weekend seemed like the perfect weekend to do it too!!
