I posted last fall about a potential move to Vermont and here we are, finally making it. We (husband, myself and 6 year old daughter) just bought a home in South Burlington and expect to move there in early August.
What's the best way to get to know the locals? I'd be interested in joining a book club, volunteering at an animal shelter and joining a health or fitness club at some point. Does anyone here have membership at either Burlington Country Club or Vermont National?

The first thing you could do is join the Front Porch Forum for your neighborhood (frontporchforum.com). Introduce yourselves there.
Do you have kids? You'll meet a lot of people through them.
The South Burlington Recreation Dept has tons of programs, not only for kids but adults too.
I've played VNCC-it's really nice. Membership is steep though (for me anyway!).

I agree, there's a lot you can do through your child's school. You can also check out the Humane Society of Chittenden County to volunteer your time with animals. Although small, you could also check out GreenMountainMoms | Where Moms Connect, a resource for Vermont moms. The SB paper is called The Other Paper, which will help a bit, too. Just search the web and you'll find a ton.
