I'm a 30 year old single black male interested in moving to Burlington. I'm from Orlando FL. Just want to get away from he hussle and bussle of city living. I was wondering about racism up there. Would I have a hard time fitting in. I'm just thinking about moving there possibly when I finish school next year. Im in the IT field. Are the computer jobs hard to get? And a big worry is finding work and th cost of living. I was just amazed on how expensive it would be for the average middle class person to live up there. Outragious lol. I really dont want to rent and I have a feeling I would be renting there for the rest of my natural life lol. There has got to be some decent priced condos somewhere around there. My limit is around 80,000. I really don't want to live in a house just yet. Does Burlington really have a high number of college students who just up and leave cause of the high cost of finding a place to live??

I'm not sure what you could get for 80,000K in Burlington or the immediate area, if anything. Go to one of the major real estate search engines like realtor.com and see what you can find. I actually just did a search for Burlington, max price 100K and got 0 hits.
Computer jobs....my other half works at GE Healthcare in South Burlington. It's a good company. You may want to check and see what is available. There are also a lot of small "mom&pop shops" that often have IT openings. Check out Seven Days | Vermont's Independent Voice or burlingtonfreepress.com | The Burlington Free Press | Burlington news, community, entertainment, yellow pages and classifieds. Serving Burlington, Vermont for an idea as to what is out there. Keep in mind Burlington is a small city (40K, metro area 150Kish) in a small state (600ishK total population) so the economy here is small. Not a whole heck of a lot of jobs to choose from, and competition can be fierce to get one as everyone "wants that good job".
Regarding diversity-well, lets face it. Vermont is one of the whitest states in the union. There is a small african-american community in Burlington. When I say small, I mean SMALL. Burlington is a very open, welcoming community, generally speaking, and I can't imagine that you would not feel welcome.
Can you swing a visit up here? Check out JetBlue. There is a daily direct flight from Orlando. If you check regularly, you can find good fares.
Good luck!
PS. How do you feel about winter!

Well thank you Vter. I will definitely need to check the place out. I looked on realter.com and saw a couple of condos out in essex. How is that area? Yeah burlington seems very small and I see why its so expensive. Alot of demand for property and not enough for everyone. I will check into the sites you gave me. Yeah the area when I see pictures online looks like a utopia. Very green and remote. Montpelier looks pretty nice too. I guess in America you got to spend alot of money to lie in nice areas without all the crime and traffic lol. My second place I was thinking about was Maine but I hear its the same there alot of taxes and housing expensive. But Vermont would be Ideal for my personality. I like to go out on occasions but be able to be secluded as well. I would not mind living further out to get a decent place to live ya know. Well they say black folks dont like cold but I'm different I guess. I dont mind it. I used to live in Idaho for a little bit and loved the weather. All 4 seasons!! I might haft to end up working at the hospital up there since I do have healthcare experience. I will need to find desktop support openings. Wish me luck!!!

Vermont is a low wage-HIGH cost area period end of sentence.
Most of the yuppies who rave about Burlington are rich middle-class kids financing
their homes and lifestyle in general at the Bank of Mom and Dad.
80.000 would pay your taxes and fuel oil for about a dscade maybe.

This post takes the cake on the manure scale among all your other posts. I'm sorry you had to move to Wisconsin but the truth is there are many in Vermont who are hard working, don't make big money and manage to survive just fine including myself, many of my friends, co-workers and maybe even a few on this forum.

Too many Vermont haters on this forum, it's stinking up the joint. You left, many have stayed and are happy to live in Vermont. Let it go. Enjoy the orange cheese and the Packers, period end of sentence.

Ditto to what MRV said - at the very least, you could have come up with something different to say on all your posts. We got your drift. You are happy where you are, and that's great, to each their own.

Be warned ComputerBlue... there are not a lot of computer related jobs up here (It's not a tech heavy state) and salaries are not competitive to what they are outside of Vermont. A lot of companies do not want to higher flatlanders because they fear you will not stay once you spend a year here.
I don't want to discourage you but finding computer work here, especially when you aren't currently living here, is not a lot of fun.

The Northeast, except for parts of upstate NY is expensive period. Have you looked into similar college towns in the south and south east. Maybe Charlottesville, VA or Athens GA? And are you ready for our winters? Last winter was a bear. I've lived in many places and I'd say this is the least racist area I've lived in, Burlington area anyway.

But job security ugh....
