Many years ago I lived and worked in the Manchester, NH area. My inlaws are still there and five years ago my older son graduated from St Anselm College. The general Manchester location is good from the standpoint of being near Boston, the coast, the Whites, but if you crave the college scene and liberalism, well, NH may not fit that requirement. It all comes down to dollars and cents as well as tradeoffs.

Towns like Burlington in Vermont or New Hampshire? Not that I know of.

Are you familiar with Brattleboro?

I'm also a huge Portland fan.

Well it has a liberal vibe. I'll let people who know more about it talk. It's not exactly like Burlington though. The only towns in the area that are a lot like Burlington in my opinion are Northampton and Ithaca NY

Default You might consider Providence..

..which has more than its share of colleges (including Providence College and Brown), and is less than one hour from Boston.

Portland is fairly nice, but has no real "college" vibe to it; as others have suggested, you might consider Northhampton or Amherst, MA, or Portsmouth, NH...Manchester and Nashua, NH are of reasonable size, bu not really college towns, either.
