I'm moving to the Burlington area next year and want to change banks now, since my current bank sucks.

Anybody have any recommendations for banks that have low/no fees and plenty of branches/ATMs in the area?

Thanks!

All banks suck, join a Credit Union. You get all the services you need and fewer fees.

If you live in Florida or anywhere north of Washington, DC, try out TD Bank. Convenient hours (including evenings and Sundays), wide range of services, no fees unless you overdraft... I've been with them over four years, and have yet to complain.

I agree with the credit union recommendation now that I know about them, and our next move will be to a credit union. But not all banks suck. I've been with TD Bank in Rutland for about 10 years (through at least one buyout).

With TD I have no-fee checking with unlimited check-writing and no-fee savings. The service has been great.

Credit Union is the way to go hands down. If you feel you need a bank, you could check out Chittenden Bank. They offer most of the same options other banks do. They have more branches around, searching for an ATM is dream. In Burlington finding a bank open on a Saturday is not that big of an issue, but in many surrounding towns that will not be the case. Merchants Bank is hard to fing a branch open outside of Burlington(in Chittenden County. I'm not sure of outside of this county).

Merchants Bank is what you want if you want a relationship with a bank and banker. Our family has used them for years, and always been pleased.

I'm going to vouch for TD Bank as well. I was at Chittenden Bank for a while, but they had fees and other inconveniences that TD did not. Also, TD Bank has more coverage.
