Here's another story about youth sports officials who think that the purpose of youth sports is to give the kids another opportunity to comply with their arbitrary rules, not to play.

SOUTH BURLINGTON — A 10-year-old South Burlington boy will be sitting in the stands this spring while his friends are playing Little League baseball because the local policy restricts late registrations — even though that policy seems at odds with the practices of other Chittenden County Little Leagues.

Some people just shouldn't be allowed to run this kind of program.

Over the years I have learned not to judge based on just what written in the local paper. Personally, I'm on the fence on this type of thing as I have experienced this from both sides of the table.

Hopefully, if there is room on the team he will be allowed to register late but I'm not going to bust on the league officials, probably volunteers, they are just enforcing the rules.

Good news.

I heard from the lad's father last night that they are going to let him play. Apparently a vacancy developed in the program and they now have room for him.

I don't know if the 182-member Facebook group helped, but I'm glad this is the outcome.

But, what is this teaching our youth? Its okay to be late? Rules are meant to be broken? I think its great that he will get to play. (As a former little leauger and coach). But when or where do we stop with it?

I hope it teaches him that his community cares about him and supports the idea that he should lead a physically active life, that he should have fun, and that the needs of the people served by an organization like the Little League are more important than mindless adherence to petty rules.
