How to survive the Great Depression of 2008 - 2009

Yeah, I was kinda thinking the same thing. I'm afraid it might be true.

Clinton and the Dems propped up the economy at the end of his term too. The economy had been tanking for quite a while before Bush took office, but W took the blame for the crash.

The media is always too negative. I have had to deal with negative things every day of my life and it can get to you. I am blind in one eye and have poor vision in the other so well, you see (no pun intended). I have tried to be thankful for small things but it is hard to read negative articles and feel good about the day.
Even if you bought at the top of the market, do you like the home you bought? The neighborhood? Etc? Well, fine - just continue paying for it. I mean, interest rates are low and you will look back in 10 years (I know, a long time) and be glad to have a roof over your head. Think of others - when I am around others, I think less about myself (a good thing) and more about others.
Responsible decisions. Get back to that. This is not a one size all fits country. If it works for you, great. Do it! If not or you have doubts, don't do it. We have all made good and bad decisions in our lives; these times are undoubtedly tough but you know what, this is a great country and we can see it through. Some of our most innovative ideas came during trying times.
I also have a credit background. I have seen too many regrets caused by poor decisions that last years and years to get over. If you have to file bankruptcy or let your credit go, be aware your credit will determine future interest rates (much higher), insurance (home and car) and job opportunities. Before you make a decision, be aware of all facts and make the one that is best for you and your situation.

bette, i'd like to make some personal attacks right now but i know that citydata forbids them. needless to say i detest your commentary because it is uninformed and misguided.
i cannot stand listening to people who refer to good advice as negativity. i cannot stand being referred to as negative. almost everyone i know thinks that i am negative because i talk about what is going to happen. real estate will go to 1999 prices or lower, most of the mainstreet stores will close, unemployment will soar. the ---- is really hitting the fan. that's not negativity, it's fact.
i tend to differ with most people though and i guess that's why i come across as negative. i think i'm quite positive. i've been waiting for this stupid economy to collapse. i've been waiting for people to understand that debt is prison. i've been waiting for people to realise that there is more to life then doing something you hate to service your debt. i've been waiting for people to get off the treadmill. i've been waiting for people to understand what consumption is doing to the planet. i've been waiting for mainstreet/wallstreet divide to narrow, i've been waiting for houses to become affordable (ie you can actually pay them off) etc now it's all happenning, i couldn't be happier.
on the op, brilliant post. i don't know anyone who's in trouble now but you better believe if i did that i'd be sending them this link

Bette, you might be interested in a few more things about that election.
In the 2002 election Bob Hoffman (me) had some major political agendas.
1) I had ahurricane disaster recovery plan that included what to do, step by step, after a major hurricane and how to prepare for it. I had been in miami after andrew. When I mentioned putting hte main roads of broward on a separate electric circuit and underground the sun sentinel guys just laughed at me.
Fast forward to 2005....no power, no gas, most jobs closed. It might not have happened. And they still ignore me..lol
2) I had been interviewed by some smaller press and said it was dumb for the county to buy land during the boom and that taxing properties on boom prices was wrong. I had told Sue at the Deerfield times that if we over spend, the loss of the boom tax money will cripple us. Now the county is dropping services for the needy as they are going broke.
3) I had the support of the BCT for my mass transit plan. green buses using a special coverage of broward and some pedestrian friendly walkways. Less than 100 million to build and less than one year. We got shut down and they opted to try for the 1 billion dollar railway along 595 (that was stopped.)
During the gas crisis, that transit plan would have helped too.
Next time, in 2010, I will not expect the media to be helping. I will stand against them.
How many of the elected politicians who commit crimes, resign in disgrace, who are incompetent, who take bribes, are endorsed by your local papers?
Answer: Every single one of them was endorsed by the daily paper in your area. Every single one.
That is some great news investigating there Lou.
When you type, sometimes the tenor of your speech is lost by the reader. I never mean to sound pompous or arrogant. Reread that with the vien of a person who is angry at the election system and the people who control it. It is anger, not arrogance.

I have no idea who Bob Hoffman is, but I don't understand what your problem is with Bette's post? Are you recommending that people be irresponsible and go into foreclosure so they can walk away? That just seems wrong.
