Actually children younger than 18 are recruited for military service.
Did you know you can go to basic training at age 17 - in your Junior year? You need to be an emancipated minor...meaning you need your parent's permission. At 18, you don't...because you are considered to be a "legal adult."

The maximum age to enlist in the Army is 42 years old. They recruit them because they are available and they can fit the standards.
