The government also "fixed" this. Postage can only go up to keep pace with inflation... they are barred from raising it more than that %. Another brilliant idea to "protect consumers", problem is it doesn't solve the shortfall. So they will either have to cut service or raise the prices for other items.
Nice example for the government regulation vs. free markets thread.

it that were to happen, i wander if the increase would be figured into the "core inflation", that would be a big bump to 5% they are talking about

Cheapest mail service on the planet, and the only country that delivers on Saturdays.
If you want to see $0.24 stamps again, write your representatives and DEMAND a Do Not Mail List. The processing, handling and delivery of junk mail is their biggest cost.

Wrong on this one. So-called "junk mail" is so profitable for them, it actually subsidizes the first class rate! Why is it profitable? Because professionals prepare these mailings of catalogs etc according to postal guidelines. The addresses are printed with barcodes, and the mail is broken down by state, city, and carrier route. It is also bundled by route, wrapped in plastic strapping, and delivered to the PO on pallets. It is pre-weighed and pre-marked with indicia. Whole bundles can be processed in less time than an individually hand-written letter.
Why do you think the USPS is fighting tooth-and-nail to stop the Do Not Mail List? It's because they see their revenues flying out the window if that happens. You'll never see 24-cent stamps again for the same reason you'll never see 29.9-cent gas again. Expect much higher first class rates if that bill passes. Be careful what you wish for!

Now that's a splendid idea.

Definitely NOT true. There are other countries that deliver mail on Saturdays, Germany for example... I was there this spring and mail came every Saturday.

Stop wasting the time, energy and resources send me credit card solicitations I do not need or want. Add the rest of the junk to this list. If I want something I will go to the store or on the internet.

Last I read junk mail was one of their bigest profit makers;without it the problem would be worse. I tyhnik the problem has alot to do witrh management;very olitical. Ever go to a small office and their is a clerk and poast master. The post master often does know what to do ;so no help.

Not a bad idea! That's probably the best way to get rid of, or at least cut down on junk mail.

I agree. In this day of the internet, email and on line billing, they can cut Saturday out. In fact they could probably deliver 4 days a week.
