Exactly! Paying for that returned postage that has "remove from list" aps in them cuts into their profit margains. If enough people do it they will hopefully stop trying to hook people while they are fishing in the junk mail pond. All it costs me to do it is some spit to seal the envelope.

I've been sending back thsoe pre-paid envelopes for years, with the words, TAKE ME OFF YOUR LIST scrawled over their solicitations. It might take a few times for the comapny to get the message, but they ususlly do...eventually. AARP is a slow learner. Their crap just keeps coming.

From my inside source a lot of time the carriers receive this junk mail that is not forwardable so they throw it in waste when they get it back. Most of theses R.T.S. junk mail may never reach it destination if these business never paid for the return service in the firstplace. Saturday delivery is a must. If there's a five day week operation Mon. thru Fri. as like most of you want it will be a problem for the Carriers that following Mon. The Carriers will have Sat, Sun and Mon. mail to case up and get out to the homes and business. Therefore your mail want get there on time or be push back a day because they're overswamp with mail from the weekend just sitting there. First class have to go out no matter what. So the Carriers will be paid overtime which will cost them more than just having them there casing and delivering on a Sat. so they 're not overwhelm that following Mon.
Besides junk mail keep them working. If majority of people goes to online billing and reducing junk mail there will be alot of USPS workers out of job. Whats the harm in receiving junk mail that will go to waste anyways. If it will keep Americans working rather than in the unemployment line, let it be and deal with it like I do.

The harm with junk mail that goes in to waste is the fact that it goes into the waste, and that it has to be picked up by the trash service or recycling company. All of that weight costs fuel to transport to homes and then to transport to the land fill or the recycling plant.

No. Ads and flyers are NOT addressed to the individual, only the address. Everyone gets them. That's because the source company/companies are paying USPS to stuff that junk into each box. But it's not addressed to me. Therefore, I should have the option of refusing it.
I don't get preapprovals and all that because all three bureaus have promo offers blocked. I'm more concerned about the ads/flyers/bulk mail because you can't do anything about that.

Those flyers come in handy during the winter. I crumble em up and use em to start fires in my wood stove.

The problem is that your junk mail may be a small businesses future. Some businesses (I know, its nice and easy to think of businesses as huge evil beings) rely on direct mail for their success. So do you just charge large, out of state companies more money for mail.... or is the local pizza place or ice cream shop going to shut down because they can not afford to market to their local community?
Higher mail charges means less business. Less business means less employers.... its not so cut and dry. I too hate junk mail and don't market using it, its a waste of money in my opinion, but some businesses rely on it.

Personally, I'd like to see junk mail outlawed. I can always use old newspapers to start my fires. If someone needs to build their business by sending junk mail to my mailbox, then I'm all in favor of letting their business fail. I can't recall anything that I've ever purchased because I learnerd about the product or service thru junk mail advertising. And that goes for radio advertising, TV commercials, internet pop ups ads, or any other intrusion into my life. When I want to purchase something, I am quite capable of doing my own research. We condemn the begger on the street ( who has real needs ) for approaching us, yet we merrily put up with the constant harrassment of businesses soliciting us to whip out our credit cards.

They are wasting their money sending it to me. That is why I would like to be on a list to only receive first class mail. I don't want the small local retailer waste their money on printing and postage to send me something that I'm just going to put in the recycle bin as soon as I get in the house.
