News, Post office posts $1 billion loss.
WASHINGTON—The Postal Service had a net loss of more than a billion dollars in the third quarter of the fiscal year, the agency said Wednesday.
For the quarter ended June 30, the loss was $1.1 billion, which officials blamed on reduced mail volume in the slowed economy, coupled with rapidly rising transport costs because of high fuel prices.

It makes you wonder just what options exist for them USPS to cut costs. It would be a shame if we all had to start paying to get our mail.

I think they are talking about USPS, not UPS. The USPS is a government agency not a public company. From what I thought the USPS always ran deficits and just had the government subsidize them.
The only thing I see from this is them raising rates.

About 20 years ago, the USPS was one of the few self-sufficient postal systems in the world.
But, they fixed it.

There has been talk for years about no mail delivery on Saturday.
I think that is where they start first in cutting costs.

We pay to send mail. It doesn't cost you anything to receive it.
There was a time that you had to pay the post office to pick up your mail or to get it from the mailman, but that ended a long time ago.

If they want to make money they need to start charging more for junk mail delivery. No more bulk mail rates - everything goes at the First Class rate.
