The real answer is that we would have more motivated blacks and Hispanics. Asians are driven to be all that they can be, where as Hispanics are satisified to achieve the level of their parents, and many blacks have no role model at all. If all races would be over achievers, this would be an even greater country.

I'm Indian and based on my observations... Asian cultures tend to place a greater value on work ethic, education, and family than Western culture. Old-stock Northeastern WASPs and Jews also have a high regard for education from what I've observed.

However, I would like to point out that one can be smart AND listen to hip hop. Do I personally listen to hip hop? Not really, but I know many intelligent people that do. It is a very legitimate form of music.

That would be great. However, most people seem not want Hispanic and Black people to overachieve. Even some of the teachers that I taught with last year had low expectations for their students (I taught a magnet school in Philadelphia.).

Coincidentally, I was teaching AP calculus and AP chemistry last year and the majority of my student were African American.

I think if you read the "Millionaire Next Door" you would find most of the traits for success listed and some populations follow the ideas better than others.

Stability of family.
Enormous Respect of education.
Careful choice of career.
Support of whole family for family success.
Non consumer values.
Sacrifice of pleasure now for future goals.
Learning from elders.

Add all these together with hard work and you too can find some success.

The real reason why Asian and immigrants in general are more successful than many blacks and hispanics and whites is that they are generally the cream of the crop that are coming over here. Hispanics from South America are far more affluent than Hispanics from Mexic. They harder it is to get to this country (i.e. buy airfare and have papers) the more educated and successful the immigrants will be. Asians (others than those coming on container ships) have to buy airfare and have papers to get thru immigration.

For this reason, African immigrants are highly successful. They are much more like Indian immigrants than African Americans. There are many Nigerians who come here starting as cab drivers and then work their way up. Some come here educated and affluent, like a couple of my co-workers in commercial banking.

Sure, it is important to have strong values and drive, but my point is that most Asians are either affluent or educated when they come here. You have to be fairly motivated to immigrate from one country to another. The longer and harder the trip, the fewer that will be able to make it and those that do generally succeed.

For those of us that are here, those that succeed do so because of good home environments and parents that push their parents (I would argue that many Asians push their kids too hard, but it obviously works with Asians dominating medical schools).

Blacks simply do not often provide a good environment for kids to succeed, particularly in the inner cities, where there are few positive role models. Hispanics are a mixed batch, with some more driven than others. Generally, amongst Hispanics, I find the first generation to be more motivated than the second. With many Mexicans not having papers, they cannot get welfare or Section 8 assistance and are given the option of either starving or working hard to provide a meager existence for their families. They often want their kids to do better in life and some (not enough) push their kids to do well in school. Others, simply work all the time and are not there for their kids, leading to hispanic kids not performing as well as they could in school.

In the black community, particularly amongst poor blacks, the picture is even bleaker, with many fathers incarcerated, many kids born out of wedlock and parents who simply do not care. I feel blacks could achieve much more if they would simply take the time to raise their kids properly and push education. I don't know about all the calculus vs. hip hop stuff.

To sum up your article, the differences between Latinos and Asians comes down to priorities. Both Asians and Latinos push their kids. Asians focus on education and then work, while Latinos focus first on work and then on education. I think perhaps the Asians have a more long-term view, with the idea that if you complete your education that you will ultimately be able to be more productive at work.

In my experience, Asian working-class parents push their kids harder than Hispanic working-class parents, though there are obvious exceptions.

Asians are more successful because both the parents and the kids push themselves harder to succeed. I feel that if this same behavior was shown in the working-class (and non-working) black community, there would be far fewer problems among poor blacks.
