But that is what it seems to be turning into.
I heard today on the radio that 80% of all the jobs created in 2008 for Americans came from small business.
Now, knowing this figure, why isn't the stimulus plan geared towards them ?
Now you all know that these big corporations are going to win all those "gov't contracts" and now there is no requirement to use American labor.
While we have the bailout for banks..I think the stimulus is a bailout for corporations. IBM doesn't need any contract for IT work but I'll bet there are hundreds of small IT shops that would survive if they got some of those contracts. But we all know how this story will end, don't we

Do you think you could give me a list of those jobs? Here are my qualifications: housewife for 20 years, less than one year of current data entry work, and artist. And could these jobs NOT run a background check because then they find out how old I am and pass me over for somebody who is 20?
I've worked for E-systems with a government security clearance (so I can pass a frickin' background check), I've worked for national magazines as a typesetter and I've worked for police departments as an artist. But the first two were in the 70s and 80s and the last one is occasional work that doesn't really fit into an online form.
The one year that I did work allowed me to get unemployment when the contract ended and I was laid off (Kelly temp). Now the people who would normally have been my supervisors are taking the jobs I qualify for.
I have arthritis which means I can't wait tables but I can type 80 WPM and 10-key about 13,500 keystrokes. I'm available immediately and have applied for approximately 25 jobs a week since February of this year.
You must know something the rest of us don't. Since my extension is about to run out, I wish you would hurry up and tell me. Is there an opening at Self-Righteous Pharisees 'R Us, where you work?

Actually many of those small busineses are sub contrators that profit from those larger contracts. Many of the large contracotrs actually have to report to the government on the work of those subcontrators.I wouldn't even want to guess the per centage of sub contraors working under those large contract;but it is a large per cenatge of small business.

She shouldn't press it any further unless there is documentation. Now, if they are giving her a bad reference, that's something completely different and I don't know how you would go about handling that. I feel for her because I have been let go before for unjust reasons in the past as well and am desperate at the moment as well. I know, first hand, how hard it is for her right now but it isn't a permanant thing and definately not worth putting her loved one's through a situation derived out of her perceived desperation. If she's crying out for help, get it for her. And be sure to let her know that ..."this too shall pass."

I'm new to this and don't know if I'm posting this reply correctly to SuSuSushi's item number 32 but here goes...In years past, I have worked my way up to higher levels of accounting by hard work and willingness to learn. I didn't have a degree so I had to work twice as hard to prove myself. Which I did. It was a win-win for myself and my employers because I excelled in my learning and performance and they didn't have to pay the salary for a degree'd employee. I was happy with this even though my wages literally put me at poverty level. Each time I started a new job, I had to go through this process all over again because of lack of degree and that blew out loud but I did it and the employers got a great deal. Now, I'm willing to work for 7K less a year because I realize and understand the emphasis put on degrees and not experience. That's a lot when you are already at poverty level but I've been smart enough in my life to live within my means and could survive. Not live comfortably but survive. We're talking 20 years of experience here and I can't get a job. Is it my age? Lack of degree? Shortage of jobs? It's all of the above. Experience, willingness and being mature enough to use a computer as a tool for work rather than entertainment is no longer important. I do not give my age away on my resume' so when I'm actually lucky enough to get an interview (there have only been three in the past nine months) there has to be a reason, other than my lack of holding a degree, that I don't get the position. I'm not THAT old. I'm only 43. I know all interview tricks so don't try to say that maybe I don't interview well. Sorry to rant, Sushi, but you struck a nerve. Walk a day in desperate people's shoes before you post such a patronizing comment. And by the way, even at my age, I still have two children at home that I have to provide for. One of them is my 11 year old nephew that I have had legal custody of for the last 7 years . When you are willing to take an additional child on while being a single parent there is nothing that you won't do to get a job. There just aren't any or you're discriminated against. Whew! There. I feel better now. And Sushi? I really hope you were kidding and if you were, please accept my apologies.

I think the solution will be for people out of work to work under the table and claim no income on their taxes. Hide your money and barter. Then get on welfare, food stamps, medicaid or whatever so the parasites at the top who make multi-million dollar incomes can pay for the lives they destroyed.

I understand where you are coming from, but do you realize we are practically in a depression? There are millions of people out of work right now! Jobs are few and far between for now. Its going to be like this for a few years.
You are living at or below the poverty line? Please don't have anymore kids!
