I can't help but be cynical at these "official" news stories about unemployment.
They're so misleading, filled with spin, half truths, "official" Orwellian speak, lots of "experts". You have no idea where the real economy is going listening to this.
Employers cut 533K jobs in Nov., most in 34 years: Financial News - Yahoo! Finance
Take this "story".
"Released by the Labor Department". Do you really trust the Labor Department? Funny, they never lead off with workers opinions of what's going on. It's always the labor department or some "official source". Who's opinion is more important?
Look at the "experts" quoted. Who are these people? Why are they quoted? They never tell you that. Joel Narrof? Conflicts of interest? Self serving interests? Who knows.
Then this,
"The U.S. tipped into recession last December, a panel of experts declared earlier this week, confirming what many Americans already thought."
A "panel of experts" leads, and *they* confirm what 60 million or 150 million Americans already knew. Is there something wrong with that? This is the sort of subtle brainwashing/manipulation the "powers that be", the administration, the govt wants you to be believe. Don't trust your own observations. It's the "panel of experts" that confirms what you already thought, got that?
You have no idea about the quality of jobs lost. The quality of jobs when unemployment was last at 6.7%. What was the average pay like when it was last 6.7%, certainly much higher. What the quality of jobs like then...I don't know....
Then our buddies Bernanke and Paulson at the bottom....sure, they're going to get us out of this
I hope people question is this stuff....
Even in a depression of 10, 15, 18%, you're not going to learn anything from "stories" (pr, propaganda) like this. The same garbage as rome burns.

There are 535 men and women (more or less, counting a few unfilled seats) that all make at least $169K and they are all secure for the next two years...
After that? Have at 'em!

with all the bad news, a little friday joke:
a man walking in the countryside meets a shepherd and a big flock of sheep. The man tells the shepherd: "I will bet you 1000 dollars against one of your sheep that I can tell you the exact number in this flock."
The shepherd thinks it over; it's a big flock so he takes the bet. "855," says the man.
The shepherd is amazed, because this is the exact number. Says "OK, I'm a man of my word, take a sheep."
Man picks one up and starts walking away. "Wait," shouts the shepherd, "Let me have a chance to get even. Double or nothing that I can guess your exact occupation!" Man says "OK."
"You are an economist working for the government," says the shepherd. "Amazing!" responds the man, "You are exactly right! But tell me, how did you conclude to that?" "Well," says the shepherd, "put down my dog and I will tell you!"

You support a company that hires a lot of Chinese workers to make their products at a cheap price.

Pretty funny I've been saying this for months before the crash. I knew we were headed for a depression when the sub prime meltdown occurred. Basically the most riskiest assets collapsed first. First it was the sub prime lenders followed by the home builders and then banks who had exposure to mortgage related debt. When the sub prime market collapsed the depressionary downward spiral started. We are now actively seeing the fallout from the stock collapse. It will have a ripple effect. Riskiest jobs will go first followed by safer jobs. I guarantee you we will see HIGHER unemployment than the great depression. Obama can't do anything. It is too late.
I'd recommend IMMEDIATELY cutting back. Get rid of the expensive cars. Sell the expensive home. Start a garden. Plant fruit trees. Prepare for the worst and hope you don't see those times but if you do, you'll be happy you prepared for it. Preparing also helps protect you from inflation so I would consider it an investment in your survival.

Why not build light-medium duty tracks into the roads....and if you want to get us away from petroleum, put in a third rail for power.
This would be a perfect infrastructure project to employ a lot of people and get our steel factories/manufacturing going again.

My only concern with rails on the roads is to wear and tear on the car...
Maybe some cities can do it better than others but...I know in some parts of where I live, going over train tracks requires having a REALLY good set of shocks...or you just have to drive really slowly..
Plus when they're putting the rails in the road...the traffic jam it will cause will be an issue and people will be idling their vehicles basically wasting gas and time.
I was pretty pissed last night when on my way home, some gasoline truck tipped over and was on fire...I sat in traffic for some time while some ******* in a Chevy was on my tail. I was more concerned about the gas I was wasting...
