If the Congresscritter could not live like the kings and queens they fancy themselves as, they'd quickly resort to taking actual envelopes of cash once again.

Much easier than trying to increase the earning of the folks back home!

If we can live at or below the median, I don't see why they shouldn't either. It would at least give them a better perspective. Maybe even weed out some of the bad ones. Anyone who takes a cash bribe should get the death penalty and it should be aired on live tv. Off with their heads!

First it was the sub prime lenders followed by the home builders and then banks who had exposure to mortgage related debt. When the sub prime market collapsed the depressionary downward spiral started. We are now actively seeing the fallout from the stock collapse. It will have a ripple effect. Riskiest jobs will go first followed by safer jobs. I guarantee you we will see HIGHER unemployment than the great depression. Obama can't do anything. It is too late.

I'd recommend IMMEDIATELY cutting back. Get rid of the expensive cars. Sell the expensive home. Start a garden. Plant fruit trees. Prepare for the worst and hope you don't see those times but if you do, you'll be happy you prepared for it. Preparing also helps protect you from inflation so I would consider it an investment in your survival.
Hi killer2021,

I agree with everything except that nothing can be done. Its easy.
We have a monetary problem which is as east to make as pressing the reset button. Large tax rebates can replace commercially created currency. It will not solve everything nor do we want to since the housing economy must be changed. The tax policy that drives us to buy bigger homes is really a long term problem. The reality is they will not do it because they work for only a few in the FIRE economy. We are irrelevant except to stop large scale riots.
As for the other advice if one has a big home perhaps two families could live in it in some cases?
I like the gardening idea since I do garden already. I am a container, SFG gardener. I try to grow a lot in small spaces. This was from last May.

If you have poor soil one can start with cow peas immediately. They will fix more nitrogen than they consume. Cooler areas will do well with snow peas. One should also know how to boost their soil content at no cost with composting and homemade fertilizer. If you have nothing else, urine is perfect believe it or not. Its sterile and contains nitrogen, phosphorous and potassium. Its just a matter of knowing what is good for your climate. The rattle snake pole beans and Romas allowed us to eat beans constantly in just 4 square feet and that took the place of snow peas which were doing the same. I still have a few black cherry that just ripened. I will then turn to some oil packed dried Romas.

I also have plenty of dry beans and rice and I know what to do with them.

Called tram lines.
Used in many parts of Europe with great success.

We had them here too once, but unfortunately the car manufacturers (the Big Three who want to be rescued come to mind) pushed and bribed for them to be ripped up.

Maybe we ought to update the name "Hooverville" now that homelessness is about to skyrocket even more than it has been .... should we call them "Bushvilles"? Seems to me there was a thread on coming up with a new name, but that might have been on another website.

Roughly 30 percent of Americans own their home outright. My mom owns hers. It's not 1/10th of all homes. It's 1/10th of 70 percent of all homes. It's also 1 in 10 are going into foreclosure OR are behind a month's payment.
The Associated Press: Home loan troubles break records again
Which, I think is effectively the same thing. My last house payment was $1410 a month. If I got a month behind, I don't think I could've gotten caught up. Had too much debt. I have *zero* debt now. Paid if all off....'cept for the house. Realized it was an anchor around my neck and sold it.

From the article.,,. let's see,,,, 1/10 of 45.5 million loans surveyed...

4,550,000 homes.....that's the number you get. Dang. That's a lot of foreclosures & displaced families.
