Video: Why the DOW may hit 4000
interesting watch
Dow Could Hit 4,000 - MarketWatch Video
Remember, that the DOW was in the 4000s in 1995, this is something that is entirely probable.
AND, it looks like he is not alone in his prognosis, Louise Yamada calls it at 4000 as well:

Get real people. First of all the DJIA is a terrible gauge for the economy as it only takes in 30 companies and ironically those are the companies that are sucking wind right now

Cramer was saying they would have to change the DOW for it to go below 5,000. He said 5200-something is the worst case scenario. Is the Dow 30 today the same as it was in 1995?

No the Dow 30 is not the same as 1995, not even 2007. They decide and PICK good companies to place into the index, hence its not a true calculation of the current economic conditions. Yes it can go to 0. All 30 companies fail and are out of business. However they would probably select more companies

If the Dow went to zero, that would imply that the economy wasn't in a recession or depression, but that it had just stopped. That isn't likely.
Why do we have so many people who want to believe that the sky is falling and we're all doomed, like we're living in a sci-fi movie. Things are bad...they've been bad before....they'll be bad again. The economy will recover, whether it's this year, next year, or 2011, but it will recover. Please stop this mindless doom and gloom, end of days talk. It's getting very old.

How much longer can our economy survive with our gross domestic product continually dropping and the federal government printing worthless dollars to shore up bad corporations? At some point its going to come to an end.
