Default Citibank: Is Trouble Brewing?

I got a disturbing call from Citibank calling about my mortgage. I am current and actually make extra payments, so I thought WTF why are they calling? I'm sure it's not to offer me a lower interst rate... When I called and spoke to "Manish" it turns out that Citibank is calling people to verify their employment phone numbers. What can be going on? I asked a colleague what may have been the issue, and it seems the bank may be trying to figure out how many of their account holders are still employed.

Any thoughts about what's going on?

If such an evil and impersonal bank is wasting call time from Bombay (or wherever it is they have relocated the call center jobs to) to check on people's contact information, something terrible must be up, no?

Never underestimate of large organizations to waste large amounts of money, especially when that money comes from taxes...

I would have said "Manish I am sure your life is not as easy as mine. I pay taxes to the IRS, do you? See, my taxes have gone to the company that pays you. I think that is not a good thing, as no taxes from your government help me. I cannot give you what you are asking for. Good bye and good luck increasing employment in your country."

All these big giant monster banks like Citi, BOA and Wachovia need to be broken up. We need to bring back reguation barring a single bank fro holding more than 2% of the nation's deposits or opertaing in more than 20 states.

Some big banks have contracted with outside firms to administer these new government mortgage programs but the details of funding and processing are so convoluted that the programs are stalled. I would guess these contract firms are simply trying to keep billable hours up by tweaking customer records.

Geez, I sure wish they had hired Americans to waste my tax money... Anyway, I read in the WallStreetJournal that Citibank is begging to be allowed to pay some of their overpaid workers bonuses this year. I haven't seen much about that in other news... I wonder if they got it...
