...I have found Facebook to be a marvelous tool for reconnecting with others from the past, for example former colleagues who have moved away. Not your cup of tea? Fine. But what I don't quite understand is the vehemence of the anti-Facebook postings here. One person even said it was EVIL without explaining why he thought that. Such a statement is totally meaningless without an explanation behind it.

Well said.
I have reconnected with old friends that I have lost track of over the years. A number of old friends have found me. Facebook also provided people with a way to contact me after the recent death of a family member. In short, Facebook is an excellent tool and you can use it however you want. If people make TOO much information public, that's their fault.

Have an account, connected with few people. My usage has dropped, so i only check for a few minutes, maybe post/comment 1-2 times a week.
There is way too much noise. I look for specific friends that have usually have interesting posts or links. Otherwise, i dont care that you took a picture of the sandwich you had for lunch.

About 70% of my friends and relatives are on Facebook. Shame. I won't join because my life is nobody's business LOL and I don't like that creepy little Zuckerberg kid who is running the company(?).
I mean, how do they even make money? I don't know because I won't join, but it either has to be advertising or selling demographic information to people...either way, I'd rather not be involved.
|
They make money by selling your information to third parties. It goes beyond page ads. Zuckerberg is an amoral little toad. When a greedy sleazeball calls his users stupid f-ing retards for trusting him, take him at his word. Your passwords and information are the product on facebook. I consider stalkers a minor threat compared to Zuckerberg's behavior, especially how he enacts new techniques and technology without informing or asking for consent.

I agree a lot of folks got carried away with sites. It was tacky mostly, however , I did not use it that way. I have met a lot of new friends, who had the same interest. Somtimes I wonder where a lot of them went ? Can't find anyone I used to know On Myspace, they just vanished.. It allowed me to be creative with blogs, and world events, just like on City-Data.I miss the music stream a lot , it was an icebreaker to meet new friends, and it was all free! I oftened used Myspace by loading up all my favorite music. Made for great entertainment. Facebook is not the same for sure , and I use it a couple of days a week only. Its rare when an old friend contact's me. Facebook is just noise mostly, and I think it will go away at some point, a fad, and yes a place for a lot of scamers. never had problems on Myspace, City Data is worse actually.

Facebook has been a pretty good experience for me. I found lots of friends I had when I was a kid back in grade school that I never thought I would ever hear from again.

You got that so right that I gave you a + positive rate I hope your niece is ok and makes a lot more new freinds in real life.

Never have been on Facebook.com.....probably never will. Certainly will never open my own account. My life has not changed for the better or worse by not being a Facebook "friend". I use the old-fashioned telephone, or face-to-face conversation, when I want to convey a message to somebody. It has amazing effects!
