I am sure everyone has heard of the boom in Williston ND because of oil drilling. Hypothetically, lets say you have some money, not a lot, but enough to play around with, how would you gain financially from the population boom going on there? I would like to hear ideas that have nothing to do with the oil industry itself though.

Bail bonds, food truck, housing.

Bail bonds might not be the best. WIth amount of money being paid most can post their own bond.

Food truck or other food service...

Housing. Trying to find decent housing is nearly impossible. You could easily start with the fema trailers and other forms.

The latter two would be best to make money.

Yes, food and housing is always needed by everyone everywhere all the time. It is always an options where ever you go. And just about everyone everywhere can provide that somewhat to a certain quality. I was thinking, with the spike in people, means cockroaches, and other pests will be a big problem. Extermination service could be a good one. Or is the cold weather gonna keep that problem in check?

There is a massive housing shortage in Williston. Also for needs like good. That is the main reason why I suggested housing or food service. A house is selling for 3 or 4 times what they were 5 years ago. Rent is also good source of revenue.

The stories floating around are retailers like walmart place the pallets of goods out on the floor and the pallet is gone by morning.

You can sure work as exterminator... However there are other needs that are more pressing. If you read about the California Gold Rush of 94 those who made the money were those suppling goods to the miners in search of their fortunes. The same might apply there.

You mention retailing goods, and I thought about that and figured Walmart, Costco, BJs, Target will have all that covered by now. Hoping this thread would generate more buzz, unless similar threads have already been made, and this topic was exhausted.Retail requires quite a bit of start-up capital, so most likely the chain stores will dominate. But a skillset is something money cannot hold back to an extent. Therefore you should have a fair chance at competing. What do you think?

Along the lines of my first thought. Add to that booze, gambling, and "other" entertainment for the men...

Then lower on their priorities would be food, laundry, housing.

Howz bout other forms of entertainment like paintball, adult arcades, amusement park even, or are these types of people not interested in that sort of thing. What about fitness centers or do these workers get plenty of physical exercise already, sports and recreation centers? Just like to get the imagination going, brainstorming practice if you will.

Well the topless bars do real well.

The jobs are either driving trucks or working on drill rigs where your on your feet.

Keep in mind that the boom is well underway, so it's possible that much of the easy money via housing, rentals, etc. has already been made. I know of builders from western Montana who have been over in the boom area building houses now for almost two years. Granted, things could double again over the next three years, but oil and gas has always been a boom & bust industry.

I don't think rec-centers or adult arcades or the like are really what the oil-field crowd would be looking for based on my experience. Cold winters place a bit of an upper limit on any pest problems as well.

I'd focus on things like auto-repair (especially heavy-duty equipment repair if you have any experience there), providing medical services, insurance maybe? The food truck sounds like a good idea as well.
