I work for an IT company (Fortune 500) in San Antonio TX.

I have been an IT contractor since Oct 2010. Since then I have seen this company acquire a few other IT business, increasing the number of people to be supported with the IT equipment....

My question is, does it make sense for an IT company to acquire X amount of business BUT not to increase their staff by hiring the contractors that they have (for example me!).

Absolutely, as long as it doesn't negatively affect the product or service being offered.

Put yourself in the employer's shoes. Would you pay for employees you didn't need?

That is the benefit on an existing business acquiring another related business. They can reduce the total number of employees for some things like administration. For example you don't need two separate payroll systems, that can be covered by one payroll system.

Try to think of IT solutions which will allow them to lay off workers and make more money. Then they will love you and increase your hours! And of course do NOT think up IT solutions which would allow them to eliminate your job!

Are you saying you have your own business and work on a contract basis?
