Well, Sears/K-Mart doesn't surprise me. I went to the "closing sale" of the one in Tillmans Corner.

Well, yeah.

The fundamental rule of branding is that all markets divide into one of two kinds of brands: The low-cost brands and the high-end brands.

Really, all the ones you described above are middle-brow brands.

Sears may close some locations but won't go out yet. They own a chain of successful hardware stores called Orchard Supply in California.

Sears is an American Icon, and would be very bad news if they went out.

I think we are talig the Sears brand now and they are in trouble. Alot of companies are closig or selling non-producing branches of company.Others are usig the cash they have accumlated to go private or for buyback of stocks also.

I think the problem with Sears and many of these old style retail stores is that they haven't really adapted to the current consumer market. Sure they have websites where you can buy stuff...but their stores are not very appealing for customers.

Customers today want that "WOW factor" if they are going to go in a retail store.

Sears stores are just kind of blah and not very sexy .

The same with KMART , Target is beating them at that game by making the stores appealing to people.

Best buy , their prices are a lot more than online..so there is not much of a reason to buy from them.

JC Penney also has the outdated mentality despite efforts to freshen themselves up.

Today's consumer seems less interested in department stores, but more focused on niche stores/products.

Perhaps if they scaled down the size of the stores they could do well..

With Sears I believe they own the real estate so that is where most of the value is in the company.

They are basically a big real estate company.

Sears has A LOT of assets and A LOT of infrastructure. They have been around for 150 years and will be around for another 150 years. I worked closely with their online department and they are doing very well with their online business. There are a couple of small entities that are owned by Sears which are someday going to change the game of how to market to consumers. Now lets just hope they can figure out what niche their Brick and Mortar stores are trying to fill. I feel like the stores are just so plain and expected.

True..I guess that's the problem with some companies that get so big...they stop innovating or being creative in the right ways.

Sears won't completely disappear but they are facing some very tough choices very soon. JCP is in some ways less burderned will funky product mix but also has very tough road to stable profits. Best Buy has all kinds of options still...

Barnes & Noble has announces some store closings, they have a lot of hurdles...

Office Max, Office Depot & Staples are all getting beat badly by Sam's Club and Amazon.

Grocery chains like Safeway and SuperValu are having their butts kicked by WalMart.

Sports goods chains are all getting whipped.

People with stagnant income and rising taxes don't spend money, I was someone in Washington DC thought of this ...
