I think it is all a bunch of hooey.

I talk to a lot of Walmart employees and they receive more than minimum wage and get benefits. Several people I have talked to have been allowed to transfer to a different town at their own request (like maybe if a spouse is transferred)

Walmart is no worse than anyone else and they are a lot better than some. I'm drawing the conclusion that the Walmart bashers just make stuff up.

I'm not a Walmart shopper, but I give them a big thumbs up for hiring the handicapped and elderly who no one else will hire. Walmart greeter may not be a great job, but it is a wonderful job if you are otherwise unemployable and Walmart doe not need to spend all that money, to hire someone to sit by the door and greet customers.

The general public wants the cheap Chinese junk that Walmart sells. If people didn't prefer it, then Walmart would have been out of business long ago.

Legislation is now making its way through the California legislature—with the support of consumer groups, unions and, interestingly, physicians—that would levy a fine of up to $6,000 on employers like Wal-Mart for every full-time employee that ends up on the state’s Medi-Cal program—the California incarnation of Medicaid

with "affordable care" coming in 2014, you can bet it wont just be walmart cutting hours.

this approach is reasonable only if its applied to everyone and not just walmart or "large retailers." but the better option would be to stop offering medaid to employable people and reform healthcare in a way that lowers costs.

Quote it all you want but the headline says
California to Walmart
That's pretty shabby journalism, intended only to perpetuate the Walmart Myth.

Everybody likes to stir the septic tank with a big stick so that the haters will have more fodder for the cannons.

Whatever your feeling may be about Walmart, their practices and their ethics, they employ a lot of people and provide affordable product for a lot more. Not my favorite store but they don't deserve all the crap heaped upon them.

We have 2 Walmarts in our city and a Walmart Neighborhood Market. The Neighborhood market took over a long empty spot at a newer open mall. The other Wallmart took over a long empty Mervyns location at the end of a dead mall. They reviatalized the location, upgraded the area, including the outside of their end of the mall. Oh and they brought lots of new jobs that did not exist before.

In the city I work in Walmart is redoing a former K Mart location that has been empty for maybe 6 or 7 years. They are building a new building there at that location. I am thinking that they will also offer plenty of new jobs.

The best thing to do would be to just pass a real universal healthcare law. There's no reason why businesses should be have to bear the burden of healthcare costs for their employees.
Universal healthcare = cheaper healthcare that is paid for through the income tax.

So we should raise our taxes then?

I say make healthcare a benefit that a company can choose to offer or if they choose not to offer it then they inform the employees that they do not offer insurance. If a company wants to offer that benefit then let them. If not then that is fine as well. Why should we force a business of any kind to offer health benefits to anyone? Sounds so socialistic to me. We also should not force people to have to pay for health insurance if they do not want to pay for it. Let the market decide the outcome and not Government intervention.

Many great companies offer insurance anyway as a benefit. Meaning that they offer something over and above the employees normal paycheck. If you want insurance and don't want to pay then get a job at one of those companies.

One has to understand that Wal Mart, in many cases, is an employer of last resort. In other words there are Wal Mart employees that probably couldn't find a job elsewhere and the store provides a great service to these people and the local economy as well. Moreover, these jobs simply aren't worth any more than Wal Mart pays.

Wal Mart works the system. No surprise here, they do it more effectively than any other business. I have not seen any other corporation embrace women on welfare, people with disabilities, like Wal mart has...they saw an opportunity for tax credits, and people who have health insurance, and they ran with it. They did nothing incorrect, it was the law that had the loop holes.

Wal Mart is not bad. They took advantage of an opportunity...now, the law is changing....
