Do you have anything in mind at all? I mean - are you thinking of spending $200 or $2,000?
How many products do you have? How often will you be updating your products? These are questions that will affect your approach.

I've been doing web design for about 10-12 years and find one of the most important things when choosing a hosting company is customer service. If you are building the site yourself, make sure you use a company with good customer service because you will probably be calling them for help. In all those years, I've only used two companies, GoDaddy and Network Solutions. There are people that will complain about both but my experience with GoDaddy has been ok, not great but ok. Call during the week and in the morning if you need help. Network Solutions is more expensive but I've had good to excellent service from them. Again, don't call on the weekend. You will save a lot of money if you get your domain and hosting plan yourself and not through a company or web designer. After that you can build it yourself, buy a template or have someone build it for you. If you go on Craigs List you can find someone or Guru.com where designers have ratings and bid for jobs. As far as price and details it really depends on what type of site it will be. A site can be built in a few hours or take a few months depending on what type it is. After it's built make sure you have it optimized and submitted to the search engines or there's really no point in building. Good luck.

I registered my domain through Google Apps, which uses Godaddy. While the Google Apps has allowed me to build a relatively decent site on my own, I'm going to want something more sophisticated sometime soon. Will it be easy enough to have somebody build a new site for me, host it on better servers (maybe Dreamhost) and still use my own domain that I've already registered?

Sure - I do it all the time. In fact, I have ALWAYS preferred to have clients register and own their own domains.

I have extensive experience in cooperating webdesign companies from outside the states. They offer high quality, fast and reliable service and last but not least they are much cheaper.
I can recommend you guys a cool webdesign company, you will never be disappointed if you use them. If you need them, jus let me know.
