Since folks will be a bit slack -- this would be a REALLY smart time for the communities where this is happening to encourage some mass community volunteer efforts, like:
Cleaning / Earth Day-ing the local parks.
Making public sites for Community Gardens.
What else?

i find it offensive that they would not treat their employees equally:
ABC News reports that while 46,000 union workers will be shut off from their regular paychecks, the “white collar” management will continue to receive their salaries.

Since most of them are in Michigan, and we have 4" of snow with another 12" on the way, there are not a lot of those projects that can be done right now. Maybe painting the inside of some community building or school.

Union workers are seen as fungible. Meaning one is the same as any other. Managmenet people are considered unique and difficult to replace. If you have a well trained and qualified engineer who is in themiddle of designing the new XTRS vehicle that gets 100 mpg, you do nto want to lay him off and then try to hire someone else too replace him later. While the assembly workers are viewed as if one is just as good as any other. IN fact, the unions requrie them to be treated that way.
Thus they lay off the union people because they are instantly replaceable with more union people when things get better. Salaried people will go elsewhere and will not be avialable for re-hire.
