I've had to hire many times and one of the things I've found helpful is actually calling at least three references. It seems a lot of people don't think you will actually call the references and I've weeded out a lot of people this way. I also would call their last couple jobs and ask question about what type of employee they were.

Interesting thread. I was wondering if employers have good luck with Craigslist. As a writer-for-hire (advertising/PR/feature articles/editing) I've found Craigslist to be filled with employment ads that are bogus...list compilers, those looking for free writing for start-up publications and such. I've pretty much discounted it for my personal use. It's good that it's working for the employers, though, if not for the employee. Of course, I'm a freelancer, so maybe it's different for me.

I still will respond to an ad if it lists the employer's name and contact information, but no more blind ads--those all seem to be bogus...
