News, Unions gained more members in 2008: Labor Dept.
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Union membership in the United States rose in 2008 for the second straight year, accelerating a turnaround begun in 2007 that followed decades of decline, the government reported on Wednesday.
Union members accounted for 12.4 percent of employed wage and salary workers in 2008, up from 12.1 percent in 2007, said the U.S. Department of Labor's Bureau of Labor Statistics.

It should be pointed out that the increase is due to government workers. There is still a decline in the private sector.

It is about time the workers in this country realized that a union is good for them and their jobs. Now to get the rest of the world's workers organized.

I agree. Until the corporations of this country can be counted on to NOT ship every last position overseas and/or hire a "shipped in" foreigner to replace every last american worker ... I hope this trend can continue.

Unions do a lot more than protect pay. They also contribute to safety, and to those in the transportation industry help keep the "go or no go" decision in the hands of the workers, not management.
I wish unions weren't necessary and in a perfect world they are not but we don't live in a perfect world.

If we are going to allow International Corporations we need an International Union. Workers are not capable of defendng themselves from corporate exploitation as individuals. Ony unions can do this because governments are owned by the corporations.
