YOUR company has negative earnings, Should YOU get a raise?
You have worked your butt off. Your department has made significant progress because of your contributions.
However, you can't control the economy. Business is down. Your company has negative earnings for the year.
Performance evaluation comes around, and you don't get a raise.
Are you ok with not getting a raise? If your company has negative earnings, how much of a raise should you get? What is your opinion?
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
A CEO has worked his ass off to keep a company from being ruined. Earnings for the year are down, infact they are negative.
However, for the past 5 years the CEO has been with the company, the company has had VERY GOOD EARNINGS.
You can't control the economy. Business is down.
Should this CEO receive a raise? Why not?

No raise. Timing is everything. The CEO should have approached the board when profits were not in the red. Giving a raise to a CEO, is opening a can of worms. Every employee will want one after the top dog gets his.

You are the OWNER of a business and you work your butt off and the economy goes down. Do you give yourself a raise? LOL.
If, within a corporation, you can show growth in your department when others cannot, then go for a raise. Maybe you'll get it, maybe you won't, but at least you won't totally P.O. the boss the way others who didn't show positive gains would.
A raise is not a given, unless you had it worded into an employment contract. I've employed people that were far smarter than the job they were doing. Did they get a raise because they did the job about the best that it could be done? Of course not. Every business has a bottom line. If you ignore that when handing out raises, you no longer have any bottom line money to work with. Sometimes life socks. A business is not your mama.

Is the company generous with raises/bonuses during good years, or do they make you feel lucky to get a 2% COLA?
If you aren't rewarded when their numbers are up, you shouldn't be punished when their numbers are down.

In a God awful economy like this where hours are being cut, jobs are being cut, businesses of all types are closing?
No bonuses, no raises (unless of course you're on commission). It wouldn't be prudent at this juncture.
Having been an hourly employee, a salaried employee, a commissioned employee and a business owner, I can say that poor economy means either very little raises and bonuses ( I got a turkey once back in 80) to no raise or bonus to a give back or of hours cut. In the case of being a business owner, longer hours and less pay and they say it's great to own your own business?

It is! I get to bless myself out all the time, cut my wages, and I can't get fired or quit.

You should probably get a pay cut since the company is about to go under or at a bare minimum start having layoffs.
