any area is safe where the community is willing to join together for the common defense and well being.
when they think the drug dealer next door the mugger in their building is none of their business, its not safe.

Most of Calgary is "safe". I would be looking for an apartment close to where you will be working as the commute can be painful in Calgary....especially in winter. Downtown, for the most part, is safe but not very vibrant. It is improving but it wouldn't be on my list of places to live. Also - not close to any of the hospitals.

The areas around all of the hospitals are very safe... with the exception of the Peter Lougheed Centre in the NE, which has spotty areas.

Do you know where you will be working?

Very true but being a single female and in a different country where I don't know a lot about makes me want be more cautious because I know safety is a big issue

same here in houston where the crime rate is pretty high some areas here you do not go to ever even all the store chains avoid putting businesses there I mean you simply don't go there unless 1 your from that area originally and have family 2 your looking for trouble 3 you get lost

so I can't help being overly cautious even though calgary is a completely different place I showed my mom a walk through video I found on youtube its about 28 min long in high def (awesome) she's like its so beautifal I agree

Calgary has one of the lowest crime rates of any major Canadian City:
Calgary clinches enviable spot on crime rate list of Canadian cities | Calgary | News | Calgary Sun

Sharp drop in robberies helps drive down Calgary

Compared with Houston - there is approximately 50% less crime in Calgary according to crime stats I found online.

All of the residential areas close to the Children's Hospital are exceptionally safe.

However, it is close to the University of Calgary, so it will likely be more difficult to find an apartment. In general, finding an affordable place to live in Calgary is a huge challenge.

Try rentfaster.ca to get a realistic picture of what rent will cost. You can use the advanced search feature, click on the "Proximity" tab and The Children's Hospital actually comes up as one of your options. Look for properties within whatever distance range you feel comfortable with...I would suggest 10 kms to start.
