There's an issue of conflict of interest in the role of the President of the University and Big Oil Enbridge that started in 2010. This does not bode well for the University of Calgary being the top university under 50 years in the world. 2016 is the last year for the University of Calgary to participate in "best university younger than 50 years". Additionally, the University of Calgary administration is being sued by the student union because the administration is claiming that they miraculously took ownership of the 55% student union interest in (and title to) the MacEwan Hall student building. From the time it was built in 1969, students owned 55% of the building. When the MacEwan Hall centre was expanded in 1999, students contributed 19million, while the administration contributed 13+million; 55% and 45% respectively. Bizarrely, when the administration agreed to oversee rental space in the MacEwan Hall expansion, they interpreted that as the student union giving up interest in their 55% ownership of the building.

Will University of Calgary students wake up now that they know they are paying a salary of nearly $600,000 for a gps engineer to attend meetings with the board of governors (who appear to be somewhat hand picked by Big Oil) in the role of president of the university of Calgary and students? What does the mayor of Calgary earn annually, and how does the salary of $600,00+$130,000 from Big Oil compare? What about the prime minister of Canada ... who earns more annually: the president of the University of Calgary (with her 2.3 million dollar office renovation) at $730,000 annually or the Prime Minister of Canada?

If the University of Calgary President earns more and has compromised the reputation of the university through blatant conflict of interest, shouldn't that university president be removed by students - especially if there was administrative monkey business with the 55% interest and ownership of the MacEwan Hall building in 1999.

Which is the bigger job ... running a university, a city, or a country? Which salaries seem reasonable?

Trying to create smoke where there is none?

As far as the Enbridge deal goes, are there issues, maybe, maybe not, but unless you're prepared to cough up the $2.25B that Enbridge has for the University, you don't deserve a seat at that table.

With that level of contribution, they will get significant say on how that is spent. Welcome to academia.

The ownership of Mac Hall will be sorted, and students have zero say on the hiring or compensation of administrators. Their role is that of student, not recruiter.

As far as salary commensurate with responsibilities, I'll be sure to bring it up at the next meeting when we discuss why hitting a ball/puck with a stick, or throwing a ball into a ring warrants a salary exponentially higher than a University administrator.

President Cannon asked to resign. Pay attention to how the students addresses her, much in the same way that Prime Minister Harper became Steven Harper. Also, pay attention to his concerns. She only responds to one of his points, and the newspaper only mentions one of his points.

For the last month, the ucalgary student union has demanded that President Cannon, of the University of Calgary, resign. Issues raised by students are:
  • in October, 2013, 8 million dollars are missing from the University of Calgary pocket books.
  • In October, 2013, that information was reported to Finance (the university of Calgary HR FINANCE department)
  • it was decided by the 8 people attending the meeting that the missing 8 million dollars would be swept under the carpet (by all accounts, that missing money has not been audited).
  • $4.2 million spent of office fixtures
  • trying to take control of Mac Hall with a 45% interest.
And then there's the Enbridge "conflict of interest" problem, where the President of the University of Calgary sat on the Enbridge $130k profit and appointed Enbridge friends to the table, and the president of the university of Calgary Elizabeth Cannon conceded the $130k annually to keep the $530k annually as the salary in her role as the president.

Doesn't it seem weird that the president of a university, which some people claim is a "corporate business", makes more money annually than the Prime Minister of Canada? He makes $325k annually. She makes $520k annually.

What takes more skill: running a university, or running a country? Why does the president of the university of Calgary earn more annually than the Prime Minister of Canada?

Hello?

Perhaps a student from the University of Calgary can explain why so much of student tuition is lost to HR expenses and finance department debits.

At least Alumni have their (the student body) back.

Alumni probably remember that 55% of the student union building belongs to students, and so it seems that all alumni are wondering why the UCalgary Administration has been so heavy handed with demanding control of all Student Union assets.

It doesn't make sense to alumni and students. Why is the administration so out of tune with the university community?
