My boyfriend moved up here from Ohio. He is done school and has a degree. He really needs to find work here. Does anyone know what he has to do to be able to start work quickly? How does he get a work Visa? Thanks!

There are some very knowledgable and helpful people here at City Data, jessim_2000, but your most accurate source for information is the actual government ministry in charge of such matters.

Go to the Citizenship and Immigration Canada web site, obtain their 1-800 number from the Contact Us section, and give them a call.

You'll then be able to ask any particular question you like and get an official answer.

A Temporary Work Permit sounds like it may be his best bet. Here are the [oversimplified] steps...

1) Find an employer that can't find a Canadian to fill a job and wants to hire/sponsor a temp work permit
2) Employer applies for a Labour Market Opinion
3) Wait 6 - 12 weeks to see if it is favorable
4) Arrive at the border and apply for the work permit (takes 20 minutes)

My company used a fantastic Calgary based attorney to help me with the process. If you want his contact info, feel free to send me a PM.

Default thanks!

thanks guys this info is really helpful! Do you guys know of any company's that are willing to go through this process? or have already gone through the process? Because The problem is, he got a job and the company said they were going to go through the labour market opinion process but then ditched him without warning so it has been hard to find a placfe that is actually willing or able.

thanks!

Finding an employer that is willing to go through the process can be difficult. The City of Calgary has hired a great number of immigrants and is doing a hiring drive now. What field of work is your boyfriend in?
