I am seriously thinking of moving from Columbus, Ohio to California. I've always contemplated the move, and now it looks like I'll have the means to do it. I'm selling two rental properties. I'll have a nice bit of cash to work with as a cushion until I can find a job. I've always been a county government worker in social services..so I don't anticipate a huge problem with finding a job.

Anway, my daughter has a chronic illness and she can't tolerate extreme heat or cold. I'm a single mom, with a three year old and a seventeen year old. My seventeen year old will be off to college in a bit..any suggestions on location? My top priorities are climate, safety, cost of living, and nearby colleges. And, I need to add that I would love to be near a beach, within an hours drive. I'm thinking 1500.00 per month for rent, give or take a couple hundred bucks.

Any thoughts?
Sorry if I'm responding to an old post, but I'm surprised no one mentioned this. Why are you so adamant on leaving Ohio? You can even move to somewhere warmer like Cincinnati if you have to. Is it because your daughter cannot tolerate any kind of Ohio weather? From your posts here in this thread, you seem to have no idea what to expect in California, or elsewhere. Have you considered staying in Ohio? It's a huge jump you're making. If you're settled and actually own properties in Columbus, why would you want to uproot your life and go pay rent in California?

You mention your daugher has a chronic illness. Ohio and just a few other states (according to some data I read a few months ago) have this much of easy access to healthcare. Obviously, we can't come close to competing with California, but we have 7 medical schools, while California has 10, even though California is almost 4 times as big as us. Yes, medical schools don't automatically equate to hospitals, but I bring this up as a rough estimate.

I don't mean to diss California at all. I mean California is expensive for a reason - everyone wants to live there! But have you thought about the financial impact this maneuver may have on your long term livelihood? You mention that you don't have a job yet. I would never have the guts to move to another place without not only having a job, but also having a backup job!

Anyways, I just thought it might be worth giving you a different opinion. Plus, I gotta show some state pride!

I wish you the very best of luck!

I see you've followed up on three moving threads, 5+ years old. They posters generally do not return to the forum once they've received answers (whether they like them or not).
