Portland may have a meth problem, I don't know, I don't live there or want to. I think the entire Pacific Northwest kind of sucks to be honest.

GASP! A Californian that doesn't to pack up and move to Oregon! Just kidding! That's a misconception in Northwesterners' minds.

Well, coastal towns aren't exactly lush with things to do, either. Yes, there's the beach, but that's about the only thing unique they have to offer (and milder weather, which some people prefer). I go to the coast there once in awhile and am always surprised at how little is going on. I'd almost bet that Fresno offers more things all-around for arts, culture, and entertainment (besides a beach). But that's Fresno, which isn't "close" enough to bored kids in smaller towns.

Meths and druggies. . . Not a lick of excuse for any of them, I don't care how "bored" they are. Same with the gangs (and that's as far as I dare go with that topic!). Boredom stems from lack of imagination.

LOL this guy with his B.S. "I Don't" Yes you Don't have a Ferrari, just like your imaginary PhD. Shouldn't you be trolling the bay area forum trashing Oakland. Stay focused please.

Small coastal cities are just as boring as valley cities. They just have better air.

MrFantastic has a way of putting off people wherever he posts [must be a characteristic of too much meth use! ].

The nearest beach cities to Fresno would probably be either Santa Cruz and other beach areas of the Monterey Bay or Avila Beach\ Pismo Beach in San Luis Obispo county. Neither area is particularly close but worth the drive for a nice day at the beach. Santa Cruz\ Monterey have a lot to offer in addition to the beach.

But Fresno also has so many great places to swim\ water ski, fish, camp within an hour's drive: Rancheria, Millerton, Bass Lake, Friant Dam just to name a few, as well as fairly close great state and national parks: Yosemite\ Kings Canyon\ Sequoia. Then there is winter snow skiing and snow boarding so close to Fresno that people easily go up there each day.

And the same opportunities are available to any Central Valley cities\ towns. Having the Sierra Nevada in your backyard is a real treasure.

I find this entire paragraph comical and funny coming from someone who lives in Portland.

Yes, I only have over a decade of experience researching high end real estate markets and making lots of money from it.

So what would I know about the positives and cons of certain areas? Especially compared to a pot smoking unemployed kid who lives at home and spends the hours of his day explicating the virtues of recreational drug use on the internet.

Why??? I'm not a big fan of Oregon, never have been. But I lived in the Central Valley for 23 years and have lived here for 32, and so I definitely know what I like and dislike about both. It's probably hard to find another place with more things to do from July through September than here in the Portland area; unfortunately, it isn't enough to make up for the rest of the year (rain, cold).

I'll be back "home" within a few years. It's in the plan.

As for your comment about the kids smoking pot and searching the net for reacreation drug use. . . Think they gather their info and move to Santa Cruz to live in the streets? It's one helluva haven for homeless street kids.

Yeah that was a bad move. The Central Valley sucks, but the Pacific Northwest is another level of suck.

Yeah right, MrFantastic, whatever you say. Are you going to drive your red sports car to the beach again since your mansion is starting to get boring? Is that why you post your arrogant statements putting everything and everybody down? You lose all credibility when you antagonize other posters' towns. The Central Valley is too good for you.
