Hmm,

I think you mean San Pedro, not San Padro. Anyway San Pedro is an interesting little town with both some good and bad areas. But there are also other really nice areas within close driving distance to raise a family like Torrance. So it would be a fine place to work if the job is a decent one. Just don't limit yourself to looking for a place to live in San Pedro only and you'll be fine.

Take a look at this map to see the better schools and associated nicer neighborhoods: California School Performance Maps

There is significant crime and gang problems in the worse side of town. So don't just look anywhere in San Pedro for the least expensive place to live. That will most likely put you right in the worst part of town.

Look West of Gaffey and closer to the coast for the better areas. Stay away from the docks and harbor and again look at Torrance which is in a much better school district - Torrance Unified vs. LA Unified. And most importantly rent before you buy. That will give you real world experience and exposure to the area. Then you will have a much better idea of which parts you like and don't. Initially error on the side of caution (better area), smaller place, especially with children involved. You don't want to put yourself or them in harms way unnecessarily.

Derek

Rancho Palos Verdes borders San Pedro but is sort of expensive. The entire Palos Verdes peninsula is very nice. San Pedro has a sizable Greek community and a nice restaurant row on the water. San Pedro is actually in the LA city limits.

You should post this on the LA forum.

You realize of course that is where San Pedro is, it's not a small town or city out in the middle of nowhere.
