Curious how much snow is on the passes on the Pacific Crest Trail and what the rivers' water levels are like. I believe California had a big snowfall this year.

Here are a couple of good links with reports and photos:

High Sierra [domain blocked due to spam] • View topic - TR: Big Pine Lakes 7/3-7/5

July 4 Sierra Club Backpack - a set on Flickr (http://www.flickr.com/photos/51815705@N06/sets/72157624307557719/ - broken link)

From the reports so far it looks like the Big Pines Lakes region is a good place to go with trails that are open without much snow at least to the lakes. Check out this larger image which looks really gorgeous: High Sierra Relaxation - FM Forums

There was still snow at the Tioga pass entrance to Yosemite a couple of weeks ago, and the rivers are full and rushing!

Along Hwy 88, there was some snow in deep shade at 7000 ft a week ago. A little more at 8000 ft. Above that there was snow in some of the exposed areas.

The snow melts rapidly during warm weather. I would guess at least half the snow I saw last week is gone after some warmer weather and the thunderstorms that brought rain to some of the areas.

In the late summer the sunny areas are usually clear of snow by the end of July at all elevations. Above about 9500 ft the shaded cirques and northern exposures often have snow lingering through the end of the summer, and it varies significantly from year to year.
